Disney Channel stars Laura Marano (“Austin & Ally”) and Leigh-Allyn Baker (“Good Luck Charlie”) will co-star in the network’s new original movie, “Bad Hair Day,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Set to premiere in 2015, the comedic buddy adventure will star Marano as a high school tech whiz who’s bound and determined to be crowned prom queen. But, on the big day, everything that can go wrong does go wrong, starting with her sudden and epically uncontrollable hair and her once lovely but now destroyed prom dress. She soon comes to rely on a down on her luck cop (Baker) who’s in pursuit of a missing necklace that the teen unwittingly has in her possession. Prom day goes from bad to mad as the pair is pursued by a dogged jewel thief (Christian Campbell) on a wild ride across the city.
Baker is also executive producing the movie, which will be directed by Erik Canuel and film in Montreal, Canada. The writers are Eric M. Gardner, Steven H. Wilson, and Billy & Matt Eddy. Joel Rice, Denise Carlson and Dawn Wolfrom serve as executive producers alongside Baker. The pic is produced by Muse Entertainment and began production this week.
Marano’s “Austin and Ally” is the number one series in its primary timeslot among kids 2-11, kids 6-11 and tweens 9-14 for 2014 to-date, and was the number one series on television among tweens for 2013. In total viewers, Disney Channel has aired five of the top six original movies in cable TV history, including “High School Musical 2,” “Teen Beach Movie,” “Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie,” “Phineas and Ferb: The Movie,” and “Camp Rock.” The only non-Disney Channel movie in the top six is TNT’s “Crossfire Trail,” which ranks fourth and aired in 2001.
