A crowdfunding campaign for Rooster Teeth’s “Lazer Team” sci-fi comedy movie has raised a record $2.48 million from 37,497 funders in a month on the Indiegogo site.
Indiegogo and Rooster Teeth said the campaign has surpassed the Indiegogo campaign for TV movie “Gosnell.”
The companies said the initial funding goal of $650,000 for “Lazer Team” was met within 10 hours of the launch of the campaign and reached $1 million dollars within the first three days of the campaign.
“In a world filled with sequels and reboots, Lazer Team is a brand new IP being made possible by the people who want to see it,” Rooster Teeth co-founder and creative director Burnie Burns. “That is what crowdfunding is all about.”
“Lazer Team” takes place in the late 1970s when the Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence project received a onetime signal from outer space saying that we are not alone and the galaxy is a dangerous place. Working in secrecy since then, the U.S. government has been training a warrior of incredible skill to don a suit designed by the new alien allies.
Rooster Teeth made the announcement on Sunday — the final day of RTX, its Rooster Teeth’s annual gaming and Internet convention held at the Austin Convention Center with over 30,000 attendees.
Filming on “Lazer Team” is scheduled to begin in Austin and New Mexico in August with plans for a spring 2015 release date.
Rooster Teeth produces the web series “Red vs. Blue” and “RWBY.”
