spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2013/01/25/warner-bros-lands-director-for-long-planned-robotech-movie/You most likely don’t know the name Nic Mathieu yet, but Warner Bros. thinks you should. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is giving the commercials director a shot at helming the big-screen adaptation of Robotech. The classic ’80s syndicated cartoon, which was actually created by re-editing three different Japanese anime series, focused on an Earth defending itself from gigantic aliens with equally large robots built from a downed enemy spaceships. The film has been in the works at Warner Bros. for a while, with plenty of screenwriters taking a pass at the script. Akiva Goldsman and Tobey Maguire are on board to produce. While the source material is sprawling and huge, it remains to be seen exactly what part of the story the film focus on. Mathieu might not have any features to his credit, but he does have another film in the works at Warner Bros. called The Wind, as well as one for Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps titled The Story of Your Life. Robotech is expected to be a sprawling space opera in the vein of Paramount’s Transformers films or the upcoming Guillermo del Toro epic Pacific Rim.
