Bidding for the modified 1965 Chrysler Imperial used during filming of the 2011 movie ends June 26.
One of two extant custom-made Black Beauty "hero" cars used in the 2011 movie version of The Green Hornet is on the block at Boston's RR Auctions. Bidding stood at $34,529 as of June 23.
The 1965 Chrysler Imperial was converted by Dennis McCarthy of Vehicle FX, of Sun Valley Calif., who modified cars for Fast & Furious 6 and Batman Begins. The car is equipped with its original 413-cubic-inch V8 engine and has 71.421 miles on the odometer.
McCarthy modified the stock Imperial with lime-green headlights, two hood-mounted Browning .30 caliber machine guns that simulated gunfire by firing bursts of propane, four arrays of Stinger missiles beneath the front and back bumpers, a revolving license plate that rotates to Hornet, and a lighted interior console in Chinese (for the benefit of the Hornet's chauffeur and wingman, Kato).
According to Bobby Livingston of RR Auctions, the car was one of 29 custom-built for the production, most of them stripped-down stunt models that were destroyed during filming.
Directed by Michel Gondry and starring Seth Rogen, Jay Chou and Cameron Diaz, The Green Hornet was heavily reworked by Sony Pictures just prior to its release after disastrous preview screenings. Despite devastating reviews, it grossed $98,780,000 domestically and $129,000,000 overseas after its release in January 2011.
