www.deadline.com/2014/06/marvel-setting-jon-spaihts-to-script-doctor-strange/Marvel Studios is negotiating with Jon Spaihts to write the script for Doctor Strange, the franchise-launching film which will be directed by Scott Derrickson. Doctor Strange was hatched by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko during that Marvel Comics heyday of the early 1960s. He’s a neurosurgeon who becomes Sorcerer Supreme, protecting Earth against magical and mystical threats with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts. Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing. Spaihts is writing Universal’s The Mummy reboot as well as the New Regency alien invasion pic The Darkest Hour and The Black Hole. His script Passengers has Keanu Reeves attached and made the 2007 Black List, but he is probably best known in the genre crowd for being the first writer of Prometheus, which rebooted Ridley Scott’s Alien franchise. Marvel hopes to get a script and put this one in production on a fast track. They have a short list of actors that includes Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch, and I now hear that Dallas Buyers Club star Jared Leto is also on that list. The first draft of the Doctor Strange script was penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. Spaihts is repped by CAA and Circle Of Confusion.

www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=53540"PROMETHEUS" WRITER CIRCLES "DOCTOR STRANGE"; HARDY, CUMBERBATCH & LETO STILL RUMORED More "Doctor Strange" blanks appear to be filling in, with Deadline reporting Wednesday that Marvel Studios is in negotiations with writer Jon Spaihts to script the prospective film. Spaihts was the first writer on 2012's "Prometheus," before Damon Lindelof joined the Ridley Scott-directed "Alien" prequel. He's also scripted the in-development "The Mummy" reboot for Universal, and Keanu Reeves has long been attached to his unproduced screenplay "Passengers." While Deadline stated that Spaihts and Marvel were in talks, the writer appeared confident on his Twitter account, sharing the report and stating that "Doctor Strange" is his favorite Marvel hero. Additionally, Deadline reports a short list of actors to star in the title role, in line with past rumors and speculation: "The Dark Knight Rises" alum Tom Hardy, "Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch and Jared Leto, an Oscar winner earlier this year for "Dallas Buyers Club." No release time frame has been announced for "Doctor Strange," but Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige has long discussed it as a priority for the studio. Scott Derrickson, of "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and the upcoming "Deliver Us From Evil," is expected to direct.

Spaihts wrote the first draft of Ridley Scott’s sci-fi extravaganza Prometheus and is currently working on a reboot of The Mummy for Universal. Spaihts’ script Passengers, which is currently being developed for Keanu Reeves, made the 2007 “blacklist” of best unproduced screenplays. Deadline reports that Marvel is “negotiating” with Spaihts, but negotiations must be going well because the scriptwriter went on Twitter to cite the Deadline article and proclaim “Doctor Strange was always my favorite Marvel Hero. It’s a good day.” Deadline also reports that Marvel Studios is fast-tracking the Doctor Strange project, which it hopes will turn into yet another movie franchise. Is Marvel Studios ramping up its film production in the wake of the announcement of an aggressive slate of titles from Warner Bros. and DC . According to Deadline, Marvel Studios already has a short list of actors for the key role of the neurosurgeon-turned-sorcerer that includes The Dark Knight’s Tom Hardy, Star Trek Into Darkness’ Benedict Cumberbatch, and Dallas Buyer’s Club’s Jared Leto.
