PRO WRESTLING NEWS:
WRESTLING DEATH-
---Don "The Lawman" Slatton, a colorful figure in West Texas wrestling, passed away this afternoon at the age of 77.
Slatton wrestled from 1961 to 1980 on the West Texas circuit, best known in Abilene, where he was the promoter and top local star, frequently main eventing as the King of the Chain matches. His nickname was because he was a well known law enforcement officer. His final matches were outside the territory, after it had folded, in 1981 or 1982.
During that period he wrestled some of the biggest names of the era including Bruiser Brody, Ray Stevens, Harley Race, Dick Murdoch, The Funk Brothers as well as all the area regulars.
WWE-
---Nikki Bella announced via Instagram and Twitter that today is her first day rehabilitating her injured shin. "Goin' to get this shin stronger than ever!" she wrote on Instagram. "@briannagc you're one of my inspirations! She's been workin' insanely hard!" She then noted on Twitter, "Sometimes your disappointments make you a stronger person for the future." Day 1 of Rehab... N #BellaBootCamp." The former WWE Divas Champion has not competed since the June 3 episode of Raw. No timetable has been publicly given on her return to the ring.
---WWE executive/wrestler Triple H told ESPN website Grantland.com that his goal is to have 100 percent roster recruitment only going through WWE Developmental. Although not stated in the interview, Hunter's goal points to a lack of interest in established wrestlers who currently work for TNA.
"Right now, probably 85 to 90 percent of our roster came through our system in some way," Hunter said. "Five years from now, 100 percent of our roster will have come through there."
Hunter's comment is consistent with reports earlier this month that Triple H believes TNA does not have anyone currently on their roster who he wants to add to WWE.
Hunter, who is essentially in-charge of all talent recruitment and development, views the new Performance Center as a way to cultivate WWE's own brand of wrestlers without having to look to potential free agents in other national TV companies, or focus as much energy on wrestlers from the independent scene.
"First of all you have to find the right people, the right athletes. Sometimes for guys who have been in the indies for five or six years, it's harder to break them of bad habits than it is to start them fresh," Hunter said.
"We've shut down all the other territories. There's almost no place for guys to go learn, and when they do, they're learning how to work in a junior high in front of 50 people. It's a completely different thing than working in front of 10,000 or a million on TV with a camera in your face.
"So I started this little division called talent development. It was basically to build a bridge between Creative and the developmental wrestlers. Now, other than Vince (McMahon) saying, 'Okay, you can have that amount of money,' he doesn't have anything to do with it. Honest to God, he hasn't even seen the Performance Center yet."
--- The Rock joked on Twitter that he didn't take the Batman job that was given to Ben Affleck because the bat suit wasn't big enough for his pecs.
---It appears that at least for right now, WWE is going with the assumption that The Rock won't be back next year as a short-term character as he has been for the past three years. According to information given to a major licensee this past week, they were told not to produce any merchandise involving The Rock. They were told he could be used as far as a group shot of Superstars goes but not to produce anything specific because he was not going to be featured until 2015. This was taken as a sign that The Rock is not going to do WrestleMania XXX. We still don't know if Rock has said this or not to WWE officials. It could be that an assumption was made over the call to not merchandise him individually.
---Recently released TNA Knockout SoCal Val was in attendance at Thursday's WWE NXT tapings.
---WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes noted on Twitter that he's slimmed down to 285 lbs. from 324 lbs.
---Here's the rumored card for WWE's Night of Champions pay-per-view:
* Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton for the WWE Title
* Rob Van Dam with Ricardo Rodriguez vs. Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Title
* Big Show and Mark Henry vs. Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns for the Tag Team Titles
* CM Punk vs. Curtis Axel for the Intercontinental Title
* Dolph Ziggler vs. Dean Ambrose for the United States Title
* One of the Total Divas vs. AJ Lee for the Divas Title
* The Usos vs. Erick Rowan and Luke Harper
TNA-
---The official YouTube account of TNA Wrestling has released footage of Dixie Carter presenting the individual who portrays X Division Champion Manik, TJ Perkins, with an official TNA Wrestling contract.
--- Sam Shaw, who has not appeared on TNA Wrestling programming since June at Slammiversary, has not returned to the promotion's Louisville, Kentucky based developmental league Ohio Valley Wrestling—he was assigned there late last year after being awarded a contract through "Gut Check." According to his Twitter account, he is currently residing in Florida and appearing for various independent groups during his hiatus.
--- Mickie James has been announced to appear at Hammer Town Comic Con at the Hamilton Convention Centre 1 Summers Lane Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, taking place on Saturday, October 5.
---F4Wonline.com published an interview with former TNA Knockout Tara. Here are some highlights from the interview: The current direction women's wrestling is taking: "I like the direction that the Divas are heading. I also think there are a lot of talented females on the indy scene that could shine in TNA. I'm not sure that I understand what direction they are heading. They say never say never in this business. But I'm comfortable saying I will never return to TNA. I feel like I am still in peak physical condition. I still am able to have great matches. I would like to continue to wrestle, but my plate is full right now. We are looking at more locations for the restaurant. We are looking to expand our brand. I have an offer on the table outside of wrestling that I'm considering. There is also a group that has approached me about starting a wrestling organization. I am blessed to be in the position that I am in right now. I'm considering my next move, and for the time being, I won't be taking any more Indy appearances outside of those I've already committed to." Her release from TNA: "It was a surprise to me. I went to TNA because I wanted to work with some of the great female wrestlers that I hadn't faced like Kong, ODB, and Sarita. TNA has definitely shifted their focus as far as the women's division. It was really my love of wrestling that kept me going. I didn't think it was the right fit for me anymore. My contract was up in a month or two. They knew I wasn't going to re-sign. First, they had the travel guy call me and tell me I was released. Then Dixie called me later that day and said that it was a financial thing, and they knew I was ready to jump ship anyway. I think the classy thing to do would have been to give me the opportunity to quit rather than getting released. But at the end of the day, everyone got what they wanted."
