According to the article, Philadelphia is the other competing city, and Santa Clara mayor Jamie Matthews will be flying to WWE headquarters in Connecticut next week to pitch Vince McMahon. ---Sam Roberts posted his latest SummerSlam week interview, this time with Paul Heyman. During the interview, Heyman discussed Brock Lesnar, why he would make a great god and Anthony Weiner. He was also asked about his relationship with the McMahons. "Much better now that I'm not on the creative team because we're not butting heads on anything anymore," Heyman replied. "I just don't thrive in a creative environment that is dominated by a monopolistic dictator whose entire life is surrounded by the fact that it's his universe and thou shalt worship him as thy god."
--- Sin Cara's injury at last night's RAW was apparently not that serious. He already returned to action at tonight's SmackDown taping and defeated Damien Sandow in a dark match to open the show.
---Beyond Wrestling All Killer TV Episode for August 20,2013-
---Ring of Honor is heading to Chattanooga, TN on September 6th for a big live event on the road to “Death Before Dishonor XI” in Philadelphia! Match Maker Nigel McGuinness had to wait until after the Semi-Finals of the World Title Tournament were set to make the main event official and now that “Manhattan Mayhem V” is in the record books, ROHWrestling.com can announce it:
“The World Title Tournament is getting closer to its conclusion.” said Nigel, “The semi-finalists are set, the match-ups are determined, and it will either be Adam Cole, Tommaso Ciampa, Kevin Steen, or Michael Elgin who will earn the title of ROH World Champion in Philadelphia. But before we get there, when ROH heads to Tennessee in just two short weeks, I have signed a tag team bout with these four individuals! Before they face each other in the semi-finals, opponents will became teammates as Cole & Ciampa will unite to face off with Steen & Elgin in a tag team battle. It's a preview of what's to come at Death Before Dishonor and it will go down in Chattanooga!”
In addition to those bouts, McGuinness also informed ROHWrestling.com of three other contests that he has signed for September 6th:
- World Tag Team Champion Bobby Fish vs. Caprice Coleman
- World Tag Team Champion Kyle O'Reilly vs. Cedric Alexander
Coming off their win over Adrenaline RUSH in NYC, C&C Wrestle Factory will go it solo in Chattanooga against the World Tag Team Champions in a pair of bouts that could have some implications on the future of the tag team division!
- Alabama Attitude (Mike Posey & Corey Hollis) vs. Adrenaline RUSH (ACH & Tadarius Thomas)
RUSH, coming off their loss in NYC, look to bounce back in the tag team division with a victory over a duo who had their shot at dethroning reDRagon back at “WAR” in March. Posey & Hollis have proven themselves more than capable in their previous ROH appearances and they too would love to get in the hunt for the tag team titles by taking down RUSH in Tennessee!
Tickets for ROH's debut in Chattanooga on September 6th are on-sale right NOW in the ROH Store!!!
----------
On Saturday September 7th Ring of Honor heads to Birmingham, AL for the very first time and we are bringing the very best professional wrestling on the planet to the Boutwell Auditorium! A Ringmaster's Challenge bout has already been signed with World Title Tournament Semi-Finalist Adam Cole going one-on-one with Roderick Strong in a unique 2/3 Falls match-up and now Nigel McGuinness has confirmed several additional bouts including two Proving Ground match-ups, one of which has a new twist....
Proving Ground: Instant Reward
World Tag Team Champions reDRagon (Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish) vs. Alabama Attitude (Mike Posey & Corey Hollis) vs. Adrenaline RUSH (ACH & Tadarius Thomas) vs. Cedric Alexander & Caprice Coleman
**Should AA, RUSH, or C&C be victorious then they will earn an IMMEDIATE World Tag Team Title Match against reDRagon**
By now most fans are aware of what the Proving Ground concept entails; a challenger goes head-to-head with a champion and if that challenger either defeats the champion, or lasts the time limit, then said challenger will earn a future championship bout. In a case of the Four Corner Survival variation on the match, the champion does not even have to be pinned for the winner to earn a title shot, further upping the pressure on the title holder.
Well Nigel McGuinness has added a further wrinkle into this contest because, for the first time since the inception of the Proving Ground concept, not only will it be a Tag Team Four Corner Survival BUT should AA, RUSH, or C&C earn the victory, they will get their title opportunity on the spot! No waiting for the next slot to open up, no delay until the next event, the winner will ride that momentum straight into a title match with reDRagon!
Proving Ground Match
World TV Champion Matt Taven w/ Truth Martini vs. Jay Lethal
**If Lethal wins, or lasts the time limit, he will get a TV Title match during "Death Before Dishonor" weekend**
A former World TV Champion himself, Jay Lethal will attempt to earn a shot at the belt he nearly reclaimed at "Best in the World 2013" during a Three Way contest with Taven & Jimmy Jacobs. Besides that match, these two men are no stranger to one another, most recently being part of a Four Corner Survival at "Reclamation: Night One" alongside Michael Elgin and Adam Cole as well as several other encounters in both tag team & one-on-one formats.
The Proving Ground has not been kind to Taven though. He has dropped matches to both ACH and Eddie Edwards during his TV Title reign but, when it came time to defend the championship against those men, by hook or crook Taven stepped up to the plate and still remains TV Champion for what will be 6 months by the time he arrives in Birmingham.
That makes two official Proving Ground matches but if you look at the other bouts Nigel has signed to take place on September 7th, it almost seems as if the entire card is made up of contests putting a lot of people in a position to prove themselves:
Survival of the Fittest 2012 Rematch
Michael Bennett with Maria vs. Davey Richards
- Luke Hawx vs. "The Sicilian Psychopath" Tommaso Ciampa
- "God's Gift" QT Marshall vs. Kevin Steen
- Raymond Rowe vs. "Unbreakable" Michael Elgin
It will be quite the interesting night in Birmingham when Ring of Honor comes to town with the pound-for-pound best professional wrestling on the planet! Tickets for our September 7th debut at The Boutwell Center can be found right here on ROHWrestling.com or through the venue box office, Magic City Tix.
---The following was taped on Tuesday from Bakersfield.
WWE Smackdown tapings for August 23, 2013:
- In-ring segment with WWE Champion Randy Orton, introduced by Smackdown GM Vickie Guerrero. Orton says he is a true role model. He did not know that Triple H would screw Daniel Bryan at Summerslam. He didn't need anyone's help on RAW. Orton asked for the fans support, which got a "NO" chant. Orton proclaimed he is the face of WWE. Daniel Bryan came out and ripped on Orton, calling him arrogant. Bryan asked for a rematch with Orton tonight. Orton said Bryan would have to wait until Night of Champions. Orton went for the RKO, but Bryan slipped out and dropkicked Orton, sending him retreating to the outside.
* Backstage segment with Smackdown GM Vickie Guerrero. Bryan vs. Wade Barrett in a Steel Cage was made for the main event.
1. WWE Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel w/Paul Heyman def. Cody Rhodes
* Afterwards Heyman & Axel cut a promo about CM Punk. Axel challenged Punk to a match on RAW Monday and said he would put the Intercontinental Title on the line.
2. Dolph Ziggler def. Big E. Langston w/AJ Lee
3. WWE World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio def. Christian
* Afterwards, Del Rio cut a promo saying the Latino community should worship him. Ricardo Rodriguez came out and introduced Rob Van Dam. Christian nailed Del Rio with a missile dropkick, then Van Dam hit Del Rio with the Five-Star Frog Splash.
4. The Big Show & Mark Henry def. 3MB in a 2-3 Handicap Match.
* The Shield cut a promo on Show & Henry on the Titantron afterwards.
5. Darren Young def. Antonio Cesaro
6. Daniel Bryan def. Wade Barrett in a Steel Cage Match
* Afterwards, Bryan left the cage, but was attacked by Orton, who was hiding underneath the ring. Orton stood over Bryan to close the show.
---Ring of Honor announced tonight that they would return to Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday 1/25/14 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
That date is the night prior to the 2014 Royal Rumble, which will also be held in the Steel City. Tickets for the ROH event will go on sale tomorrow AM for Ringside Members and Friday for the general public.
---WWE officials noted that John Cena's surgery for his partially torn triceps tendon under Dr. James Andrews today was deemed successful. There was no initial word of how long he would be out of action past the original estimates of four to six months.
--- John Cena got his elbow/triceps surgery. His recovery will be one of the storylines for the six new episodes of Total Divas that were recently signed. I don't know this, but it was pointed out that Naomi was wearing her engagment ring during her match on Raw Monday night, so I wouldn't be surprised in the least if another storyline involves her "losing her ring" in the middle of a match.
---The scheduled debut events for XSE in Florida were canceled for this coming weekend. The story making the rounds among the wrestlers is that Ric Flair, who was slated for signing appearances, pulled out to take another booking in Virginia without notice and the promotion didn't want to run with their biggest name as a no-show.
---Lex Luger's book signing in Ridgewood, NJ drew about 100 fans yesterday. Luger was signing from a wheelchair but was in good spirits and extremely friendly we are told.
---Stephanie McMahon noted she and Triple H and will be at Gleasons Gym in Brooklyn, NY today to announce "a huge partnership" with the milk industry.
---Lex Luger appeared on Pro Wrestling Powerhouse Radio on August 20, 2013 to promote his new book "Wrestling With The Devil" and talk a bit about his career in the professional wrestling business.
Among the topics Lex discusses include: his start in professional wrestling, weight lifting advice for the fans, The Lex Express, Macho Man Randy Savage, possibly winning the WWE Championship and much more!
On the Lex Express & Vince McMahon:
"I thought they were out of their minds! I was all having fun being The Narcissist with the mirrors and the pyro and the girls. And I got called into Vince McMahon's office off the road. We were travelling 300 days a year then, in Stamford CT. right out New York City here. And, I thought, 'What did I do wrong?' I thought I was getting called into the principal’s office. He sat down with me and laid the whole thing out. The slam on the USS Intrepid on July 4th and then he talked about the bus too. He laid it all out for SummerSlam. I thought he was out of his mind, but he was absolutely spot on. He truly is a marketing genius…"
Relationship with Randy Savage:
"Contrary to what a lot of people probably think or might assume, behind the scenes we were always very good friends. Travelled together for long period of time, went to the gym together, travelled to Europe together, we played cards together. Even later on, when I had a relationship with Elizabeth, he'd already been divorced for so many years. He brought other women and valets to television…I think he's one of the best performers ever, and I'd love to see him in the Hall of Fame…"
Please listen to the entire interview at www.blogtalkradio.com/pwpradio/2013/08/21/pwp-radio-48-lex-luger-interview or you can listen on iTunes and Stitcher Radio!
---The Manhattan Mayhem event from over the weekend, which featured the return of Eddie Kingston & Homicide and was headlined by The American Wolves vs. reDragon for the ROH Tag Team titles as well as the next round of the ROH title tournament, is now available for VOD iPPV orders at www.rohwrestling.com.
---Luke Hawx is booked to work the ROH 9/6 and 9/7 events down South. There's been rumors he's signed a ROH contract but those are incorrect.
---Rosa Mendes will not be part of Epico and Primo's new repackaged team, Los Matadores. Mascarita Dorado, who signed with WWE earlier this year, is penciled in to join the group at a later date.
On a related note, WWE recently trademarked "Torito" and "Torlito," which may be the new names for Epico and Primo.
