She previously had parts in "The Sopranos," "Everybody Loves Raymond," Adam Sandler's "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" and the original "Taking of Pelham One Two Three."
Anna Berger, a character actress who frequently played small, matriarchal roles in films like The Taking of Pelham One Two Three and TV shows like The Sopranos, has died, her agent Michael Greene confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
The New York Times, which previously reported Berger's death, said that she died on May 26 at the age of 91.
In the original Taking of Pelham One Two Three starring Walter Matthau, Berger played a mother taken hostage on the subway. Matthau was a childhood neighbor and friend of Berger's, according to The Times.
Berger also had bit parts in Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors, Adam Sandler's 2008 film You Don't Mess With the Zohan and 2001's Ghost World and on TV shows like The Sopranos -- where she played nursing-home resident Cookie Cirillo in two 2002 episodes -- as well as Everybody Loves Raymond and NYPD Blue.
The actress, who also appeared on Broadway, was born in Manhattan and grew up in a two-bedroom tenament on the Lower East Side, The Times said.
She began acting as a child and began playing older women even while still young, including in school productions, according to The Times.
Berger, who lived on Manhattan's Upper West Side, is survived by her husband Robert Malatzky; two daughters, Susan Malatzky and the actress Joanna Sanchez; two brothers, Alex and Milton; and two sisters, Florence Adler and Shirley Brauner, The Times reported.
