Mondo, the ever popular collectible arts boutique arm of the Alamo Drafthouse that’s grown into a powerhouse of selling limited art by renowned artists that sells out near immediately, and regularly puts on stunning shows in their very own gallery in Austin, have revealed first plans for this year’s MONDOCON.
A seeming festival of everything beloved by Mondo staff and contributors in the areas of pop culture and niche interests, the first ever MONDOCON will coincide with the first weekend of the 2014 Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas at the Marchesa Hall & Theater on September 20 and 21, 2014. The convention “will bring together unique guests from a variety of areas to celebrate film, music, art, toys with the world’s finest artists, designers, illustrators, painters, toy creators as well as directors, composers and more. The convention will include new artwork and products as well as panels & special screenings.”
It would only be appropriate for the first guest announcements to be a stellar lineup of illustrators. And it is just that. Frequent Mondo collaborators like Jay Shaw, Jason Edmiston, Jock, Phantom City Creative and Ghoulish Gary Pullin are joined by legends Bernie Wrightson and Basil Gogos and the great artist, writer and HELLBOY creator Mike Mignola.
MONDOCON tickets will be on sale from Wednesday, June 4th. Single day wristbands are $35, while two-day passes will run $70. For full info and a FAQ, visit MONDOCON. Also on sale this week, and to make the announcement all the more exciting, is a beautiful new Mondo BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN poster from Mignola. You can see that, below (and at EW).
If you were considering hitting Austin this September for either Fantastic Fest or MONDOCON, the two events running partly parallel should only encourage you more. Fantastic Fest is simply unreal and should be experienced by genre fans, especially this, it’s tenth anniversary edition. MONDOCON’s excellence is obviously yet to be determined, but the care put into everything at Mondo is evident and the festival is already shaping up swell. That’s not to mention Mondo’s recent collaboration with the likes of Bleeding Skull! to put out CARDS OF DEATH ON big box VHS. They’re dips into distribution of VHS and Vinyl should guarantee a host of eye-widening collectibles you’ll want to scoop.
