The film stars Juliet Stevenson, Max von Sydow and Rutger Hauer. The drama, filmed primarily in India and the U.K., explores the life of Mother Teresa through letters she wrote to her longtime friend and spiritual advisor, Father Celeste van Exem (played by von Sydow) over a nearly 50-year period. “The movie became a labor of love and a real passion for me over the last 14 years because of Mother Teresa’s lasting impact on all of our lives,” said producer-director William Riead. Other producers are Lisa Riead and Tony Cordeaux. Mother Teresa was working in Calcutta during the 1950s when she founded the Missionaries of Charity after hearing a call from the Lord to begin ministering to the poorest of India’s poor. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her role in founding the order By the time of her death in 1997, that order had grown to more than 4,000 sisters running orphanages, hospices and charity centers.
