variety.com/2014/film/news/tobey-maguire-books-civil-war-odyssey-1201195348/Tobey Maguire and producing partner Matthew Plouffe have acquired movie rights to Peter Carlson’s book “Junius and Albert’s Adventures in the Confederacy: A Civil War Odyssey.” The book tells the story of two Northern journalists working for the pro-abolitionist New York Tribune — Junius Henri Browne and Albert Deane Richardson — who were caught by Confederate soldiers and imprisoned in seven different prison camps over 20 months before escaping from North Carolina in late 1864. The pair traveled more than 400 miles over a month over the snow-covered Appalachians with the help of slaves and pro-Union bushwhackers before reaching Union lines a month later. The book was published in hardcover in 2013 by PublicAffairs/Perseus, and the trade paperback is scheduled for publication this month. Maguire and Plouffe are producing through their Material Pictures banner. The book was brought into Material Pictures by creative executive Anastasiya Kukhtareva. Maguire’s producing credits include “Rock of Ages” and the upcoming “Z for Zachariah.” He appeared in “Labor Day” and “The Great Gatsby” last year. Carlson is the author most recently of “K Blows Top” and “Roughneck: The Life and Times of Big Bill Haywood.” The sale was made by the author’s literary agent, Scott Mendel at the Mendel Media Group.
