Angelou was found by her caretaker on Wednesday morning, Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines told the local Fox affiliate. CBS News also confirmed that Angelou had died. She was 86. Wake Forest University later announced the news of Angelou's death in a press release. The celebrated poet recently canceled scheduled appearances for health reasons. She had been scheduled to attend the 2014 MLB Beacon Awards Luncheon on May 30 but pulled out for "health reasons." She also canceled an event in Fayetteville, Ark. because she was recovering from an "unexpected ailment" that landed her in the hospital, CBS News reported. Angelou was a favorite of presidents including George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, for whom she was asked to write a poem for his 1993 inauguration. Her original composition, "On the Pulse of Morning," became a million-seller. Angelou won three Grammy awards and directed and produced movies.
She gained acclaim for her first book, her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, making her one of the first African-American women to write a best-seller. In 1998, she directed the film Down in the Delta about a drug-wrecked woman who returns to the home of her ancestors in the Mississippi Delta.
