Hulu signed a deal with digital studio Vuguru for exclusive subscription VOD rights to three films: comedy “Play Nice” starring Mary Lynn Rajskub (“24″), horror flick “Crawlspace” and puppet-crime comedy “The Fuzz.”
“Play Nice,” about the mishaps of a couple trying to get their son into an exclusive preschool, bowed exclusively Thursday on Hulu Plus. Rajskub stars alongside Collette Wolfe (“Mad Men”), David Hoffman (“Bridesmaids”) and John Ennis (“The Zodiac,” “Mr. Show”). Film is directed by Rodman Flender (“Suburgatory,” “The Office”) and produced by Joy Gohring, Rajskub and Ryan Lewis.
“As soon as I read the script I knew I wanted to be part of this project,” Rajskub said in a prepared statement. “It was a thrill to be able to work with such a hilariously-talented cast — we all can’t wait to see it on Hulu Plus.” Added Larry Tanz, CEO of Vuguru, “The smart humor of ‘Play Nice’ will appeal to the Hulu audiences.”
For Hulu, the deal represents a stepped-up effort to build out the lineup for the $8-per-month Hulu Plus service, as the service trails both Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video in the category.
The company, a joint venture of Disney, 21st Century Fox and NBC/Universal, recently secured exclusive SVOD rights to past seasons of Fox series “The Mindy Project” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” through a pact with NBC/Universal, along with shows from NBCU’s Bravo and E! Other recent exclusive deals for Hulu Plus include CBS’s “Elementary” — and library titles from the Eye — as well as ABC’s “Nashville.”
Vuguru’s “Crawlspace,” which recently premiered on premium cabler Showtime, and “The Fuzz” will debut on Hulu Plus over the coming weeks.
“Crawlspace,” which follows a banker who moves his family into a foreclosed house and discover the dwelling’s dark past, stars Steven Weber (“The Big Year,” “2 Broke Girls”), Lori Laughlin (“90210,” “Full House”), Jonathan Silverman (“Hot in Cleveland”), David Koechner (“Anchor Man,” “The Office”) and Raleigh Holmes. Directed by Josh Stolberg (“Piranha 3D,” “Sorority Row”).
Black comedy “The Fuzz” features puppet cop Herbie who must work with his hapless human partner to track down the most powerful drug lord in town. Starring John Gabrus (“College Humor”) and Nate Lang (“Funny or Die”). Directed by Duncan Skiles and written by Chris Ford and Jon Watts.
Deal for the trio of pics comes after Vuguru’s thriller “The Millionaire Tour,” starring Dominic Monaghan and Agnes Bruckner, premiered on Hulu and Hulu Plus in March.
