She was 72. Her Sandra Carter Productions was one of the first companies to take magazines to television, producing Better Your Home with Better Homes and Gardens and Essence Moments with Essence magazine. In 2005, Carter completed a licensing arrangement with The Nielsen Co., then owner of The Hollywood Reporter, to produce a branded weekly series featuring the publication's writers and editors. It aired on Starz in the U.S. and on other outlets around the world, and more than 150 programs were produced. Her company also produced and/or distributed more than 30 first-run original programs, including Mandela: Man of Vision (which was translated into local African languages), Women of the World and Hermitage Masterpieces. Procter & Gamble, L'Oreal, Revlon, Home Depot, The Dairy Council, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Dell and Apple were among the companies that sponsored her programs, and Group M, Saatchi and Saatchi and Mediacom developed programs with her firm. A native of Pasadena, Carter began her TV career in 1973 on the syndicated Virginia Graham Show. Survivors include her daughters Sophie and Shelley, son-in-law Patrick and grandchildren Ryan and Malia.
