variety.com/2014/film/news/alfonso-cuaron-cannes-film-forsaken-1201184794/Alfonso and Jonas Cuaron, one of world’s most admired — and charming — father-son filmmaking teams came to Cannes to talk with buyers about the vision for Gael Garcia Bernal chase thriller “Forsaken,” their next film. “In a way, ‘Forsaken’ is a de facto prequel to ‘Gravity,’ ” said Stuart Ford at IM Global, which is selling the film at Cannes. “Jonas and Alfonso were working on the screenplay of ‘Forsaken,’ then called ‘Desierto,’ when they had a very similar concept and put it in space. So ‘Forsaken’ has a lot of themes similar to ‘Gravity.’ It’s about someone in a spectacularly peaceful but perilous environment trying to get home.” Directed by Jonas Cuaron, “Forsaken” has Garcia Bernal playing a man crossing an unguarded part of the Sonora desert to try to get into the United States when he and his fellow travelers are shot off one by one. Cuaron penned the screenplay with Mateo Garcia. Alfonso Cuaron produces with his brother Carlos, son Jonas, France’s Charles Gillibert and AG Studios L.A.-based head Alex Garcia. Exec producers include David Linde at Lava Bear Films. “Forsaken” has closed multiple secondary territories, said Ford. After the Cuarons’ Cannes presentation, major territory sales negotiations can now begin in earnest. Garcia Bernal’s Latam Distribution holds Latin American rights.
