L.A.-based Cecchi Gori Pictures is trying to get its long-gestating “Ferrari” biopic on track. The company is in Cannes shopping the biopic on automotive mogul Enzo Ferrari, whose family redefined the concept of the high-powered Italian sports car and almost single-handedly created Formula One racing.
“It’s a beautiful tale of the story of Ferrari battling with Maserati for supremacy in speed, yet it’s not a racing movie: it’s a ‘Godfather’ movie with racing in it,” said Cecchi Gori Pictures CEO Niels Juul.
Juul said he is in advanced talks with a well-known U.S. director who has passion for the project and expects to announce the name shortly.
The script, which has been around for years, is by Troy Kennedy Martin (“The Italian Job”) and David Rayfield (“Out of Africa”). Kennedy Martin wrote the original script while David Rayfiel did revises.
Juul said his company has been scouting locations and doing a repolish of the script “that just needs a little dusting off.”
In developing the project he is working closely with Pam Yates, whose husband, Brock, wrote 1991’s “Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races,” that is the basis for the picture.
Cecchi Gori Pictures is also in advanced talks with financiers, per Juul. “It’s looking likely we will be able to announce something more within a month or two,” he said.
The project was originally scheduled to happen in 2004 with Sydney Pollack directing and Al Pacino in the lead. However Pollack died that year.
Cecchi Gori Pictures is the originator of Martin Scorsese’s, also long-gestating, next picture “Silence.”
