variety.com/2014/film/news/cannes-shirley-maclaine-christopher-plummers-elsa-and-fred-gets-u-s-distribution-1201180082/Millennium Entertainment has acquired all U.S. rights to Michael Radford’s romance “Elsa and Fred,” starring Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer. Lotus Entertainment is handling international sales at Cannes. The film also stars Marcia Gay Harden, Chris Noth, Jared Gilman and Scott Bakula. Producers are Matthias Ehrenberg, Nicolas Veinberg, Jose Levy and Ricardo Kleinbaum from Cuatro Plus Films and Edward Saxon. “Elsa and Fred” is an English language remake of Marcos Carnevale’s 2005 Spanish-Argentine film also titled “Elsa and Fred.” Radford directed from his adaptation, written with Anna Pavignano. In the 2005 film, Fred was a recently widowed Spaniard in his 70s who has led a quiet life and retires to an apartment in Madrid with Elsa — an Argentinian and a chronic liar — as his neighbor. In the remake, Plummer’s straight-laced Fred is forced by his daughter (Harden) to move into a small apartment where he meets MacLaine’s Elsa. From that moment on, everything changes. Millennium Entertainment’s Tristen Tuckfield negotiated the deal with ICM Partners on behalf of the filmmakers. ICM Partners represents MacLaine, Plummer, Gilman and Bakula.
