--- Wrestling Is Art LIVE REPORT
August 11, 2013
East Greenwich, Rhode Island
(1) Juan Francisco & Proletariat Boar of Moldova beat El Hijo de Ice Cream & Steve Weiner. Franciscio got the win for his team when he pinned Hijo with a German suplex with a bridge.
(2) Tim Donst beat Antonio Thomas. Donst grabbed my hat and tossed it across the building before the match, so I was just going to bury this match, but it was a lot of fun. At one point Thomas got a plush Monkey and tried to use it on Donst, but Donst cut him off and hit a piledriver on the Monkey. Donst eventually got the win with a border city stretch variation. After the match, the monkey got his heat back by hitting a choke slam on Donst. The Monkey was then placed on top of Donst for the three count and the win.
(3) Jervis Cottonbelly beat Jaka (w/Sidney Backabella) via. This was another fun match with a lot of comedy involved. Backabella ended up running in and hitting Cottonbelly with his cash envelope when he had Jaka in the ankle lock for the DQ. Max Smashmaster ran down to the ring and tried to double team Cottonbelly with Jaka, but the Estonian Thunderfrog made the save, which lead right into the next match.
(4) Max Smashmaster beat The Estonian Thunderfrog. They did some comedy with Thunderfrog’s hammer. Smashmaster tried to pick the hammer up, but ended up falling down under its weight. Thunderfrog then hit a frog splash, but only got a 2 count. Backabella once again interfered by hitting Thunderfrog as he bounced off the ropes with his cash envelope. Smashmaster then finished him off with a tombstone for the win.
(5) Drew Gulak beat Tomasso Ciampa. This was Ciampa’s WiA debut and he and Gulak delivered a really good hard-hitting match. There was a particularly stiff exchange of chops and back slaps on the outside that got the crowd into the action. Ciampa dominated a lot of the action and couldn’t put Gulak away. They ended up battling up top and Ciampa hit a superplex, but Gulak rolled through with a pinning combination for the win. Both men shook hands after the match and the crowd applauded. Gulak has been having some very good matches lately and this match lived up to the standard he has set for himself in 2013.
(6) Francis O’Rourke beat A.R. Fox. This was the best match of the show and the crowd was into the action throughout the match. They had a good brawling segment on the outside that saw both men leave the building and brawl back into the venue and back around the ring. They had some hard-hitting exchanges and O’Rourke went for the Frank crank a couple of times, but he finally managed to submit Fox in the middle of the ring and the ref called for the bell after Fox’s arm dropped down to the mat three times. After the match, Fox came back into the ring and was given a standing ovation.
(7) The Colony (Green Ant & Fire Ant) & Frightmare beat The Batiri (Kobald & Obariyon & Kodama). This was a crazy Six Man CHIKARA style tag that was very exciting to watch live. They did a multi-man submission spot early in the match and Frightmare broke it up by scaring everyone with his pose. They did a spot where everyone took turns throwing each other out of the ring. The ref then threw himself out of the ring and Frightmare wiped out everyone with a big dive. At one point during the match Obariyon & Kodama left the building and came back with a gigantic tree branch that they used as a weapon. It came down to assailant and Kobald. Assailant countered the neutralizer and hit a twisting GTS for the win.
Overall thoughts: I had a lot of fun at the show. The crowd was small with around 60-70 people in attendance by my count, but everyone had fun and was into the second half of the show. The show was paced really well and they got everyone out of the venue in a little 2 hours including intermission. This show should be available at SmartMarkVideo.com at some point in the near future and if you’re looking for a fun wrestling show to watch as a VOD or MP4, you can’t go wrong with this show for the price of admission.
They announced that Wrestling is Art will return to Haverhill, Mass. and East Greenwich, R.I. in November.
---Randy Savage Baseball Card Below in the attachments section.
---HBO Sports was filming at Diamond Dallas Page's Accountability Crib in Atlanta this past weekend.
---TNA and OVW wrestler Sam Shaw spoke with Robert Krupar of www.ArtofWrestling.cz recently. Shaw was a TNA Gut Check winner in 2012, after being attacked by the Aces & Eights. He has bad a few appearances on Impact Wrestling since then, as well as participating in two One Night Only pay-per-views.
When asked if he was still with the company following a recent string of release, Shaw said "yes, still an independent contracted talent with TNA."
On his experience with the TNA Gut Check program:
"For me personally, it was a great way to introduce me to a much wider audience . Instead of just debuting me they used the GutCheck concept to introduce me and in a lot of ways. I’m not sure if certain people within the company knew if I would sink or swim when the bright lights and TV cameras were focused on me. My goal was to make the most of the opportunity and show that I belong and I could do some cool things when all the attention and pressure is layed on me. It’s hard to throw a guy out there if he isn’t particularly known, even on the Indy scene where there are so many talented guys that are looking for the same opportunity that I got. I’ve been doing things with TNA since 2009, as I was training under Bully Ray and Devon at Team 3D Academy (and busting my ass) which afforded me opportunities over the years that others might not ever get. Bully always told me „it’s right place, right time“ and „maximize your opportunities“ and he was totally right!"
