Focus Features has locked in an April 3, 2015 release date in the U.S. for “Insidious: Chapter 3″ after the first two films combined grossed $250 million in worldwide box office.
Focus, Entertainment One, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and Blumhouse Productions announced that Leigh Whannell — who wrote the first two films — will direct the third chapter from his own script.
eOne will distribute the picture in Canada, the U.K. and Spain while Sony will distribute in the rest of the world.
Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions, which produced both “Insidious” films, is producing the next installment along with Oren Peli and James Wan, who directed the first two films.
Whannell most recently wrote and starred in “Cooties,” which debuted at Sundance. He also co-created the “Saw” franchise with Wan.
Steven Schneider, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Peter Schlessel, Lia Buman and Xavier Marchand are executive producing with shooting scheduled to start July 7.
The first two films starred Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Ty Simpkins and Barbara Hershey, but it’s unclear if any will return.
The first “Insidious,” made for $1.5 million, focused on the Lambert family and their son confronting demons that possess the young boy. The film was picked up by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival and went on to gross $97 million worldwide.
“Insidious: Chapter 2,” made for $5 million, centers on the protagonists moving into a new house, only to find that the demons have followed the family. Worldwide grosses hit $160 million.
Whannell is represented by Paradigm, Stacey Testro International and attorney David Fox.
