For the barren, sandy planet of Tatooine George Lucas went to Tunisia and the sets that he left behind have become a busy tourist spot ever since, reportedly drawing in over 100,000 visitors a year.
But that could all be about to change as a report has come in via the Associated Press that claims that these sets are under threat from a giant sand dune which could bury the buildings. The dune has been moving towards the sets at 50 feet per year since 2002 and there’s also an even bigger one right behind it.
Brigham Young University planetary scientist Jani Radebaugh is the main scientific source quoted in the story and didn’t sound too hopeful about the buildings being saved from the sand covering them. She even went so far as to say,
Sometimes we just have to move out of the way… The sand people in Star Wars are nomads, right? Maybe they are nomads because the sand moves.
