---Recently the Shining Wizards spoke with current TNA X-Division Champion TJ Perkins aka Manik. Here are some highlights:
On the change of the X-Division to a Triple Threat format:
The only thing that bothers me sometimes, every single time you have a match like that, one guy is going to be painted as the dark horse, when in actuality they're as much a number one contender as any other person in the match. It’s kind of a double-edged sword, because guys are fighting for their individuality which provides for them to put out better performances, but it can complicate it because I think guys feel like they need to compensate more in order to stay relevant. It’s a constructive format in the sense of creating more competition, in every sense, I mean, mentally, professionally, everything, it makes you feel a lot more competitive when you know you have to share the spotlight like that. I mean, in relation to the way that the division has always been, it’s not all that different altogether from any other time in history. Just now, there’s an actual rulebook that says it’s official. We’ve been seeing it for years, it was just never written on a piece of paper.
On whether the Triple Threat format has that same feel of two guys settling issues:
I kinda feel that it’s not on the shoulders of the format as much as on the shoulders of the individuals competing. There are personal things people are drawn into, they’re there, but if you are not staying relevant as an individual, then people are going to refuse to see it. Recent history is a good example. Myself, Kenny King, and Chris Sabin shared a spotlight for several weeks. Initially, Sabin was on a tear, so a lot of people were drawn to him. So it was my job to make sure that I’m making a statement, vying for the same exact spot he is. And it ended up being a pretty equal share as far as… we all have individual stories, but people were drawn into each direction. There were a lot a people that look to Kenny as a guy that they’re hoping to hang onto his spot, and they can relate to that. There are a lot of guys… obviously the entire world can relate to Chris Sabin and him having such a comeback story. And me, having made a splash out of nowhere, I had to fight to stay relevant. In other cases you don’t see guys holding on to their… they don’t handle themselves well enough to keep that up. It goes back to the competitive nature of it. Although I do think that they are probably going to keep an open book as to how the format will continue. If we are to see headline-style matches… I mean I’m gonna wrestle the World champ in a singles match. If they can see the draw and interest in special occasions, I think the format isn’t exactly set in stone.
On working with Hulk Hogan:
I could’ve done without having appeared after beaten within an inch of my life. But outside of limping across the stage, it’s a pretty big moment, and it’s one of those things that you have to take a double-take to appreciate it. This is a guy that my mom had him sign one of my head-shots when I was a kid, and I had his autograph on my wall since before I became a wrestler. Who doesn’t know Hulk Hogan? Ten years from now a new wrestling fan will be created that maybe isn’t even born yet, and they will know who Hulk Hogan is. It’s insane to think know much impact he’s had on the world, that’s how far he reaches. Being able to stand shoulder to shoulder with the guy is a pretty powerful thing.
On smaller guys getting a chance in the main event in wrestling, especially in TNA:
Personally, it’s a case of… look at another company, like WWE, and there’s guys like CM Punk and Daniel Bryan, and people firmly believe that they’re doing such revolutionary things. But if you look back through history, there’s been somebody doing that every few years. We’re talking Guerrero and Jericho, Michaels and Hart, we go back as far as the days of Sammartino, and some of those heavyweight main eventers are like 5’10”, 5’11”, and they might be heavier guys but they don’t fit the mold… I think people assume they have a roster of seventy people that look like Batista, and that’s never been the case. But in this case I really feel like the people you mentioned, with myself, and Chris Sabin and Austin Aries, I think that it’s a situation opposite of that where the world is kind of seeing us carry the ball better than previous people who are the exact opposite mold of us within TNA. I think the fact that we’re able to build more momentum and do more with less; I think that’s where you see the transition, as opposed to older stars coming in and being handed the same ball that they’ve had previously, and maybe they can’t carry it the same way, but there was always faith in them. I think now we’re showing there can be faith given across the board because there’s a lot of people that can do just as well.
On the current state of TNA:
I think things are great. People say this, and it’s not even about wrestling but just about a lot of things, when you’re on the inside or on the outside of things looking in, and how different it can be when you’re not present for everything, and this really fits one of those cases. As far as I can see, everything is about as positive as it can be. When I was like 18 years old, I first came into TNA in 2004, and from then until now, I’ve been back intermittently, and I feel like the changes have been progressively good; I’ve never seen them take a step back, and I think the professional changes that have gone on in formats and, you know, taking the show on the road, and the touring schedule, stuff like that, everything has been a positive transition. And I think they’ve handled it really well. As far as cuts and things like that, I think that a lot of people make a big deal out of making something out of nothing. It sucks when difficult decisions have to be made, but this really isn’t anything new and not anything that you don’t see anywhere else. WWE cuts like fifty people like clockwork the same time every year. It’s just part of being… it’s with anything. If you run a professional sports team, sometimes half the roster is gone at the end of the season, that’s just the way it is. You’d like to see some guys stay. You understand when some guys go. It’s a tough situation, but I think if you look at it in a different way, professional wrestling… you could be a CEO or an executive somewhere, and if you lose your job there there’s no public announcement to the world “hey, we wish the best of luck to this guy, he’s available now,” there’s no validation, so to speak. If you work some other job, it’s more cutthroat. If you’re an executive somewhere and your contract is up or you get fired, you’re done. They don’t put it out in public that you’ve been a great employee, good luck to this guy or anything like that, you’re just out. I don’t see why people think it’s so harsh in wrestling when I feel like we do a lot for each other when ties are cut to maintain careers and such… [Emotion as a fan], something like that will never change, as with anything. You hate to see something you’ve become so attached to go... I didn’t want to see Metta World Peace get amnesty. Sometimes I hate him and want him to go to the bench, but at the same time he gets cut, you’re like, that sucks, but… Any organization, especially in entertainment, they have to make these exact same changes routinely. I think it’s not anything out of the ordinary. I think if anybody sees it that way, I think it’s a case of them trying to see it in a negative way. Then sometimes there’s tough cuts with people, where you feel like they should’ve been given a bigger chance or something like that. Maybe because of the course their career has taken, something like that, or something that’s happened to them within their personal life, or whatever their story is. But at the end of the day we all signed up for this knowing all the negatives, so I don’t see why it should be such a surprise if the ball doesn’t always bounce exactly the way we think. I mean, I’ve been homeless, I’ve been bankrupt, I’ve been cut a million times from a million places, and I’ve had opportunities taken from me that were completely beyond my control, never once did I say “man, I hate this place,” wherever I was. I signed up for this. When I was thirteen years old, I knew what I was getting into. We all do. It’s hard for the fans to understand that, but at the same time, I think if you do see the bigger picture, you would see that it’s just a tough part of any job in the world. As far as morale, not everybody has the luxury of being able to walk the halls of the locker room, but I think morale, to me, especially because I know so many people that I work with, it’s as high as it’s ever been. I think people, whether it’s WWE or here, or a Japanese company, or CMLL, sometimes negative people want… they’ll only want to see a certain reality in their head, like people walking around with their heads down, and that’s never been the case. In fact, I’ve never, ever once seen that be the case from 2004 until now.

---The goof fan (Josi the Machine) that attacked Randy Orton on 7/31 in Cape Town, South Africa pleaded guilty in a local court on 8/1. He was ordered to either pay a fine of 500 Rand (less than 51 US dollars) or serve 30 days in jail. My guess is he will pay up. He was also given a three-year suspended sentence and is not permitted to attend WWE's shows in Johannesburg, South Africa

---Notes from the Mid Atlantic convention in Charlotte :
Tons of people at the Fan Fest, a list that is endless really. Larry Weaver and Tammy Sytch were the MC's. Gerald Brisco inducted Danny Miller. J.J. Dillon talked about how hard it would be to follow Brisco, and inducted Les Thatcher, noting Les has done everything in wrestling and even though he stopped wrestling in 1980, he never retired from wrestling. Thatcher's first pro wrestling match was July 4, 1960. Sytch led people singing "Happy Birthday" to Bob Caudle. Brad Anderson, the son of Gene, inducted Lars Anderson and said it was the first time he had ever met Lars. Lars said he was able to help start his son's T-shirt business with the money he made as a pro wrestler. Tully Blanchard inducted Magnum T.A., saying how he beat the odds, and nobody ever expected he would live this long after he severed his spine. Magnum talked about how his life changed in the blink of an eye in 1986. "There's a lot of adversity in life, but nothing worth saying I Quit for." Jerry Jarrett inducted the Midnight Express, Rock & Roll Express and Jim Cornette. He said You Tube enables people to see wrestling from all over the world and from every era. He said Bobby Eaton was one of the best workers to ever work in Memphis. He talked about how Cornette would get so much heat as a photographer that he figured he'd be money as a manager. Jarrett said that when Cornette asked him how to act as a manager, he told him to just be himself. They played a video of Stan Lane, who wasn't there, because he was announcing a boat race in Florida. Ricky Morton thanked everyone. Robert Gibson didn't say much. Cornette said the Rock & Roll Express had more sex on the way to the ring than he would get in years. Eaton actually gave a good speech. Cornette thanked Thelma Cornette (his mother) and Christine Jarrett for his career, and thanked Morton & Gibson, saying because of them, people still talk about the Midnight Express today.
Sytch did a very good job as MC, and was very prepared. She noted that Cornette taught her everything she knows about wrestling.
They showed two hours of the nine hour Crockett Promotions documentary. Among those interviewed were Jim Crockett Jr., David Crockett, Jackie Crockett, Jim Cornette, Ron Garvin, Jimmy Valiant, J.J. Dillon, George South and Tully Blanchard. Jim said the downfall of the company was ultimately his fault. David blamed it on Dusty Rhodes. Lots of footage from the 60s and 70s. I was told this was worth going out of your way to see.

He said he's more open to it because his son watches his matches on Youtube, and wouldn't mind coming back as a heel. He thinks Ryback is a total rip off of him but has no ill feelings for the guy. But he does have bad feelings for Scott Hall

---WWE contacted a business a couple of weeks ago for some props for this Monday's RAW from Green Bay, Wisconsin. Specifically, they were looking for a barber's chair for the show, which will likely be used for Daniel Bryan's "corporate makeover."
On a personal note, I doubt that they would get rid of Bryan's beard -- at least completely -- given that they only recently released the Daniel Bryan "Respect The Beard" t-shirt, which you can purchase at WWEShop.com
---B.J. Whitmer suffered a neck injury at tonight's ROH show in Toronto taking a piledriver on the apron from Michael Bennett. The match was stopped and Whitmer wasn't moved for 15 minutes until being taken out on a stretcher. Whitmer has thankfully regained feeling in his arms and legs.
---Mid-Atlantic Legends Fanfest's live event 08/03/13
Our first two matches will be held under Wrestling Cares Association rules. There will be a ten minute time limit with a point system for pinfalls, submissions, DQs and countouts. If they go to the end of the time limit without a winner, they have a three minute overtime where the first person who scores a pin is the winner.
Michah Taylor (with Tracy Taylor) vs. Papadon
They locked up but neither man got the better of the other. Papadon worked over Taylor's arm but Taylor gained control and began working over Papadon's leg. He grabbed the rope to break it.
With 7:30 remaining, Papadon cheated to gain control but Taylor fought back and drilled him with a clothesline. Papadon regained control with a series of uppercuts and a big elbow. Taylor snapmared him over and tied Papadon up in a submission.
They battled back and forth. Papadon took control and stomped Taylor hard in the corner. Taylor took him down with an armbar submission and forced Papadon to submit.
Taylor 1 - Papadon 0.
With 4 minutes left, the crowd began chanting "You tapped out" and "Goddess" at Papadon. Taylor tied up Papadon's legs and worked him over, trying to force another submission. Papadon fought back with a series of forearms and a headbutt.
Papadon scored several two counts and drilled Taylor in the back with a stiff kick. He scored the pin with a belly to back suplex and may have hooked the tights.
1-1 tie.
They went nose to nose and brawled until the time limit ran out. They are going into a sudden death overtime.
They locked up and spilled out of the ring in a scary spot where they both fell to the floor. They battled around ringside, chopping and striking each other. Back in the ring, Papadon nailed a leaping leg lariat and scored the pin.
Your winner, Papadon!
Cassidy Riley vs. Corey Hollis
Hollis got a big babyface reaction since he's a hometown guy. He rolled up Riley early for a three count.
Hollis 1, Riley 0.
Riley made a comeback with a suplex into a slam.
It's now tied up.
Riley drilled Hollis with a series of shoulderblocks and locked in a rear chinlock. Riley tied him up on the mat. The fans chanted for Hollis. Hollis reversed it into a bow and arrow type of submission. Riley fought his way out and dropped Hollis in an over the knee backbreaker for a two count.
Riley locked up Hollis on the mat again, but Hollis chopped her way out. Riley went for a slingshot suplex but Hollis turned it into a sunset flip for a three count.
Hollis 2, Riley 1
Hollis nailed a series of clotheslines and a big one in the corner. He nailed a butterfly suplex for a two count. He missed a charge in the corner and Riley rolled him up for a two count. They battled back and forth and Hollis used a backslide for a two count. Riley grabbed a one-legged Boston Crab and forced Hollis to submit.
2-2 tie,
Riley picked up Hollis and drilled his knee down. He scored a two count and then drilled him with a running knee. Riley scored a series of two counts with under two minutes left. Riley went back to the Boston Crab and scored another submission.
3-2 Cassidy Riley.
Riley locked a figure four leglock on Hollis and used it to run the clock down. Holis reversed it but Riley held on.
Your winner, Cassidy Riley!
Lodi & Sick Boy were accompanied by Scotty Riggs, who has shaved his head. The Flock were babyfaces here. Lodi ran around with signs outside. They controlled Roberts and Pierce early.
Roberts and Pierce worked over Lodi for a bit. He fired back with a eries of elbows but was sent hard into the buckles. Lodi fought out of the corner with a bulldog and tagged in Sick Boy. It turned into pandemonium in the ring with all four brawling.
Lodi DDT'd Pierce while Sick Boy nailed a Pedigree on Roberts.
Your winners, Raven's Flock!
Michael Richard Blaze vs. Bev Berwick.
A decent back and forth match. Blaze was nailed with a sunset flip off the ropes.
Your winner, Bev Berwick!
Bobby Fulton vs. Mike Jackson
Fulton came out with his children, then came out and turned heel and said that he and the Fantastics gave fans a gold mine of entertainment but he wasn't inducted into the Hall of Heroes, the Rock N' Roll Express was. He said that he brought his kids to show them what their dad used to do for a living and that was give ass kickings. He teased he was going to get Ricky and Robert later.
Jackson got a nice round of applause since traditionally, he does a lot of big high spots and is in amazing shape. Fulton has put on a lot of weight but he's also a lot older.
They had a long feeling out process early. They went back and forth and got frustrayed with each other. They went nose to nose. Jackson slapped him and Bobby disrespected him. Jackson didn't like that and they exchanged hiptoss attempts until Jackson nailed it.
Fulton took control and nailed a series of shoulderblocks in the corner. He whipped Jackson into the corner but he slipped through the ropes and nailed Fulton. He grabbed his arm and walked the ropes and came off. Big pop.
Fulton cut off Jackson. The fans chanted "Rock and Roll" to get under his skin. He beat down Jackson. Fulton did the Fargo Strut to mock the fans. He beat down Jackson and used a side headlock to wear down Jackson.
Jackson made a comeback and peppered Fulton in the corner with punches. Fulton took his legs out from under him and covered him with Fulton's feet on the ropes.
Your winner, Bobby Fulton!
Not as spectacular as what we usually see from a Jackson bout on these type of shows. Jackson got a nice ovation on the way out.
They acknowledged all the legends in attendance.
Homicide vs. Damien Wayne
They locked up and Homicide backed Wayne into the corner. Wayne backed Homicide into the corner but was forced to break by the referee. They went into some good back and forth wrestling.
Homicide worked over Wayne's arm and snapped it against the ropes. He raked his back and worked on the arm in the corner.Wayne came back with a hard chop but was taken over with a twisting head scissors. Homicide pulled him off the ropes and dropped him into a powerbomb.
Wayne made a comeback and scored a two count after an elbow. Wayne tossed Homicide to the floor. They chopped each other hard. Wayne missed a chop and hit the railing.
They battled back into the ring where Wayne cut off Homicide and went for a suplex. Homicide escaped and nailed an Ace Cutter for a two count. Homicide went for a tornado DDT but was stopped and powered back into the the corner. Wayne worked him over and nailed a superplex into the ring. It sounded like a shotgun going off.
Homicide tried to fight out of the corner but was stomped down. Wayne nailed a dropkick for a two count. Homicide whipped him into the corner but missed a charge and hit the buckles. Wayne went for a powerbomb but was shoved backwards into the corner.
Homicide hit a flying forearm and scored the pin.
Your winner, Homicide!
Wayne claimed his shoulder was up and challenged Homicide to a rematch tomorrow.
The Rock N' Roll Express vs. Luke Gallows & D'Lo Brown
Your guest referee is the legendary Tommy Young. The Rock N' Rolls received by far the biggest reaction of the night.
Brown took the mic and told the crowd not to call Gallows "Festus" so of course they did. He and Gallows teased walking out. They came back and the RNR double teamed Gallows and Brown hit the ring. They pinballed all over the ring for Ricky and Robert.
Gibson controlled Brown, who broke free and asked him if that was all that he had. Gibson grabbed him in a full nelson. Brown put his legs on the ropes to break it and Gibson let him go, letting him fall hard to the mat. That enraged Brown, who worked him over in the corner with a series of rights.
Brown missed a running knee in the corner and Morton tagged in and they double teamed Brown. Morton dropped a low legdrop. They worked over Brown and nailed Gallows off the apron.
They continued tagging in and out, controlling Brown. Brown made a comeback on Morton until the RNR made a comeback and hit a double dropkick on Brown to score the pin.
Your winners, The Rock N' Roll Express!
The way it should be. Old heroes reigning supreme.
Ricky Morton thanked the fans for still being here after all these years. He said all the legends thank them. He praised Tommy Young and the crowd chanted for him. He took the mic and said, "You don't cheer the referee, that's not the way it's done." The fans chanted back, "Yes, you do." Young said he wasn't scheduled to referee but felt he owed it to the fans. The fans chanted, "Thank you Tommy."

August 2, 2013
Tyler, Texas at the Oil Palace
I attended the TNA show in Tyler on Friday. Kurt Angle was advertised, but he did not attend following his DWI. He was never mentioned throughout the entire night. His not being there changed all but one scheduled match on the card. Here are the results:
(1) Jeff Hardy beat Mr. Anderson. Jeff won with the Twist of Fate. He never even attempted a top-rope move in the match.
(2) Gail Kim beat O.D.B. Referee Earl Hebner did the whole "I Screwed Bret" deal before the match, including showing off his "you know what Right I Did" t-shirt and putting on sunglasses. Decent match. Kim won by pulling the tights on a pinfall attempt.
(3) Gunner defeated Christopher Daniels via DQ. Good match. Kazarian ran in and attacked Gunner, which led to James Storm making the save. This immediately led to a Tag Title match.
(4) TNA tag team champions James Storm & Gunner beat Frankie Kazarian & Christopher Daniels to retain the TNA Tag Titles. Best match on the show. All foir guys worked hard.
(5) A.J. Styles beat Devon (w/Mike Knox) via submission. These two did not mesh well.
(6) TNA World Heavyweight champion Chris Sabin beat Bobby Roode to retain the TNA World Title. Good match, but short. Maybe 10 minutes long.
I purchased one of the VIP tickets, which let you meet about half the roster before the show. They also sold tickets to meet the other half of the roster (minus Bobby Roode for some reason) at intermission.
They had Blue Bag Specials, which included four shirts for $20. My friend and I both received two Kurt Angle shirts, an Impact Wrestling shirt, and a TNA 2010 Canadian tour shirt. Getting rid of the Angle shirts like they were made me wonder when we'll see him back.
They also had brown bag specials which contained a figure, a program, four DVDs, and a shirt for $40, and a deal where if you bought a replica belt for $375, it counted as a backstage pass for any show other than a TV taping or pay-per-view. I saw at least five people buy one.
I'd say there were maybe 300-500 people in an arena that can seat nearly 8,000. Other than on the TNA website and the Oil Palace website, there was little to no advertising done for the show. Probably 75 percent of the people there purchased the $65 tickets. There was hardly anyone in the general admission seats.
The show ended up being a lot of fun, even though the whole show was changed up. Say what you will about TNA, but they are much more fan-friendly and affordable than WWE.

---TNA house show results
