PRO WRESTLING NEWS:
---Zach Gowan, who ten years ago was involved in one of the biggest stories on WWE television with Vince McMahon, Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper, was recently interviewed by www.v2journal.com in the UK.
The full 34:14 interview can be found at v2wrestling.podomatic.com/entry/2013-07-22T13_42_42-07_00
Highlights of the interview as follows:
On falling in love with wrestling - "One of the greatest memories I've ever had was three weeks removed from the surgery (and) having my leg amputated, sitting in a hospital bed pumped full of chemotherapy and radiation, my body ravaged with pain. I watched Ric Flair win the 1992 Royal Rumble, and for those three hours I wasn't in any pain. And for me that is what professional wrestling is all about. That is the reason I fell in love with this sport."
On signing with WWE - "(WWE) signed me eight months after I had my first match, and I was nineteen years old, so I was just a kid, I wasn't ready physically or mentally to receive that gift....I don't think that I had the proper capabilities to handle that responsibility."
On his attitude at the time, and how he was received in the WWE locker room - "In wrestling there's about 6000 unwritten rules...I definitely rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. And I don't blame anybody, I'm not mad at anybody, because if somebody came into the locker room acting the way I acted, I probably wouldn't like them either. But there's no use crying over spilt milk."
On his match with Vince McMahon at Vengeance 2003: "Vince himself, during the match, asked me to give him some stiff shots. Basically i was just giving him some wrestling punches and he yelled at me in the middle of the match. He goes 'Zach, f---ing hit me for real'. And then I got scared because I didn't want to punch Vince in the head, but I realised that he's not a wrestler, and he can't really sell or register what I'm doing if I'm not connecting with him. so I took that as a very cool opportunity. I got carte blanche to punch Vince McMahon as hard as I could in the face and I did that repeatedly! To me that felt really good. But that came from Vince himself, that's what he wanted because it was best for business...that was surreal and Vince is a maniac and I love him to death, and I'll love him for as long as I live, and he saved my life. But he's a maniac."
On regrets - "What I found out is that being bitter or having regrets ultimately is destructive to me, and so I have to practice the principle of acceptance...do i think i could have a stronger run later on in my career? Sure, but it serves no point to look at what ifs...I really think I'm the best I've ever been, and that's such a cool feeling but it's the opposite of what happened in my career, because now I'm the best I've ever been but I have very limited exposure to wrestling fans. When I wasn't very good, that's when I had all the exposure, so it's kind of funny in a tragic sort of way! All i can do is kind of accept it and smile and do the best I can do, and quite frankly I've never been happier in terms of personal and professional life."
On aspirations to return to WWE/TNA/ROH - "I am super content for the first time in my life. I get to be my own boss and take my own bookings, and I wrestle who I want to and how I want to, and there's such personal freedom and to me that equals happiness. To me, money and fame don't equal happiness. and my goal in life is to be happy.
I love wrestling more than ever and for the past 10 years I couldn't say that, it wouldn't be true, because I was in WWE and that was absolutely amazing, but then I got fired from WWE and I became very bitter and angry and I spent a good 5, 6, 7, 8 years bring miserable because I wasn't happy where I was doing these indies, because i wanted to be back in WWE, or i wanted to be in TNA or Japan. I could never find any peace, serenity or happiness being where I was. and now with age and maturity I'm completely happy being where I am, because there is no pressure.
I've had talks with WWE, and they've increased over the past few years. The thing about me is I have to be presented in a very specific manner for my story to work, and I have to be happy with what I commit to."
On dream opponents - "I've never met The Rock. I'd love to share a locker room with The Rock, because it'll be a pretty big production! But there's one wrestler I've never wrestled and I grew up watching and he was my hero for a long time, and that's Sabu. Which is pretty strange because we've travelled together and we've probably been on four hundred of the same shows together but nobody's ever put us together (in a match) and I'd love to wrestle Sabu. he was my inspiration to become a wrestler. I wanted to be the one-legged Sabu, basically!"
On his future - "I don't see my future as an active professional wrestler. I see my future in public speaking because of the generally great response and connection that I get with these kids. During the week I go from school to school and talk to kids, and i share my story with them, and to me it's so spiritually fulfilling to be able to give some of these kids some hope. And lets be honest, wrestling is a very niche market, but with speaking and getting the book out and some motivational DVDs I can hit a much broader, wider market, and ultimately positively affect more lives, kind of like Dallas (Page) is doing with his yoga. He's on Good Morning America and in USA Today spreading the word about health and nutrition, and he's affecting more people now than he ever did wrestling. And I see that as an inspiration, and that's the direction I want to follow."
---The following are some new combined tweets from the official Twitter page of WWE Superstar Rob Van Dam. Van Dam makes some comments about the growing legalization of marijuana in the United States and internationally. RVD wrote:
“FYI Last week, N.H. Became 19th state to adopt medical marijuana. Yesterday, Uruguay became first country to legalize pot. Today, Illinoise became 20th state w/ medical marijuana program. Joke all you want but your truth is changing, so is tomorrow’s education. Put that in your pipe. When the time comes to say “I told you so”…I will rise above.”

---On Dave Meltzer's radio show when talking about Cory Maclin and the Memphis tapes he sold to Highspots, we're told that they were not the original tapes but second or third generation dubs. There are originals out there. MMA promoter Jeff Osborne had some of them. One friend of ours noted that they bought one of the tapes expecting first generation quality on the DVD, and it was worse then the 20 plus year old videotape of the same stuff that they already owned.
---Joel Watts returns to pro wrestling on Saturday night. He's doing his first ever role, as a referee for Traditional Championshp Wrestling. Joel Watts refereed as Joel Armstrong. He later announced for Mid South but was best known for his production work, as one of the earliest guys doing pro wrestling videos. After Mid South closed, he worked for WWF behind the scenes for a while. He's now working for The Outdoor Channel as Joel Armstrong (Bill Watts adopted him, his birth last name was Armstrong). He asked to use the Joel Watts name for the show Saturday and is back living in Tulsa.
---Bill Goldberg recently spoke to 4th & Pain about his upcoming WWE DVD and more. When asked which current wrestler he would like to face, Goldberg admitted to not being familiar with the current roster, but that a match with The Undertaker would be a dream match. He also took a shot at Ryback at the beginning of the episode. Host Adam Carriker opened the show doing a Goldberg impression, and Goldberg said that it was better than Ryback's.
--- Former WWE Diva Maxine announced on Twitter that she's signed with Imani Films to star in a new TV series called The Cell. She will be going to El Paso next month for filming. Maxine will be playing a character named Garcia, an "ass-kicking member of the Elite Fighting Force.
---Former WWE Diva WWE Diva and TNA Knockout Katarina Waters, f.k.a. Katie Lea and Winter, has been cast in the sci-fi web series Tinker as Eldine Herzhaft. The series is currently running a Kickstarter for the pilot.
--- Another former WWE Diva, Angela Fong, has been cast as super-heroine Black Tiger in the short film, Black Tiger: Hunter Hunted. The film picks up the story of the eponymous martial arts superheroine just after receiving the mantle. Without much guidance, she begins to struggle between her duties to fight crime in Los Santos and finding balance in her personal life. All the while, she is digging to uncover the truth behind the murder of her father, the prior Black Tiger, as the leads run cold and the opposition becomes deadly. Today Beyond Time, Inc. has launched an Indiegogo Campaign to finance the production of the short, the goal is to raise $50,000 by August 9th.
--- The Irish Independent has an interview with newly signed Irish WWE Diva Rebecca Quin, who started training in Orlando last month. In the interview, Quin discussed signing with WWE.
"It's only the start now, and I can only imagine it will involve a lot of hard work and an enduring training schedule," she said. "I absolutely cannot wait for my matches to begin... I feel like the luckiest girl in the world. It is literally a dream come true. I've written journals all my life, and reading back on them and seeing how much I've wanted this for so many years, it is just unbelievable to think I'm getting a chance."
---The life of Andre the Giant will be told in comic form as Lion Forge Comics has plans to release a graphic novel on the legendary wrestler.
The book is being written by Brandon Easton and will highlight the WWE Hall of Famer's life and legacy.
No release date has been announced for the graphic novel, but the company has released some artwork.
---Jerry Lawler's first singles match since having a heart attack on RAW will actually take place on September 13th in Tunica, Mississippi against one of his biggest rivals ever - 63 year old Austin Idol.
---The JBL and Cole Show August 2,2013-
---WWE House Show 08/02/13-
RAW World Tour in Shanghai, China:
The show was very good with the arena being about half full. The start time was 7:30 and in the 30 minutes beforehand they were showing various videos branded RAW 20th Anniversary and finally a WM29 recap.
Justin Roberts welcomed us and we were set to go with our opening contest:
Triple Threat (Winner receives a shot at the US Title later in the show): Zack Ryder Vs Antonio Cesaro Vs Heath Slater
Both Ryder and Cesaro were over with the crowd. Ryder/Cesaro controlled most of the match with Slater being thrown to the outside over and over as a comedy spot. Slater eventually got back in and Ryder got tossed out. It wasn't long before Cesaro hit Slater with the neutralizer and went for the pin only for Ryder to run back in and toss him out of the ring and score the pinfall on Slater himself. After everyone had left Slater walked to the back with a round of applause from the crowd.
Winner: Zack Ryder
Aksana Vs Natalya
Natalya was very over with the crowd and controlled most of the match with several sharpshooter teases only to reversed by Aksana. When she eventually locked in the sharpshooter the crowd went wild and Aksana eventually tapped out.
Winner: Natalya
A Ryback promo aired where he said he would challenge John Cena later tonight.
Jinder Mahal Vs Great Khali
Jinder worked the crowd from the start by shouting 3MB to a chorus of boos. He worked on Khali for a while before Khali regained momentum and won with the chop.
Winner: Great Khali
Zack Ryder Vs Dean Ambrose (US Title)
When The Shields music hit everyone was looking around for them but they appeared in the entrance way. Reigns and Rollins just came out on stage but left as Ambrose made his way to the ring. Ambrose really worked the crowd and this was a good back and forth match with Ambrose picking up the win after some very near falls by Ryder.
Winner: Dean Ambrose
There was a 15 minute interval here where Justin Roberts showed us pre-signed photos of John Cena and Ryback that could be purchased at the merchandise stand.
The Miz Vs Curtis Axel (IC Title)
The Miz entered to a huge pop and lay on the ropes drinking water awaiting Axel. Axel (minus Heyman) entered to a chorus of boos. Both men immediately worked the crowd with Miz putting his hands up and getting cheered and Axel doing the same only to get boos. This went on for a couple of minutes. Good paced match back and forth with each man gaining and losing momentum. During the match there was a "We want Heyman" chant. The finish saw Axel rolling up Miz and using the ropes to get the pin. Fans chanted "this is awesome" throughout the match.
Winner: Curtis Axel
Daniel Bryan/Kane Vs Seth Rollins/Roman Reigns (Tag Titles)
Daniel Bryan was WAY over with the crowd. All 3 of The Shield came to ringside. Some good spots in this match like Reigns asking for the tag and Bryan tagged in Kane to which Reigns wanted out. The fans were chanting "Yes" and "No" from the beginning to the end. Again a good back and forth match filled with Yes chants and the end came with Ambrose interfering and causing a DQ after Kane hit a double chokeslam on Rollins/Reigns. After the match, Sheild tried to use a triple powerbomb on Kane, but Bryan made the save. Bryan and Kane then chokeslamed Reigns and Rollins. They left by standing on the ramp with Bryan shouting Yes.
Winners: Daniel Bryan/Kane (By DQ)
John Cena Vs Ryback (WWE Title)
Ryback got a good reception from the crowd but of course Cena got the biggest pop in this one. Cena took the mic and delivered an entire promo in Chinese which the crowd loved. I must say that his Chinese was pretty good, though maybe a little funny. Cena dominated most of the match but Ryback did get a good bit of defence in and even got a few "Feed Me More" chants and there was one person who shouted "Goldberg" but it didn't catch on. The crowd chanted "Let's go Cena!" and "Cena sucks!" as usual. Cena eventually won with the AA. He delivered another promo in Chinese after and then spoke English and explained he had been learning Chinese as he cant wait to come back to Shanghai in the near future but they want to expand the tour to cities like Beijing and Hong Kong. He posed with the title, went to the fans around ringside touching hands and signed a few autographs and left.
Winner: John Cena
Justin Roberts thanked us and they played Fandagos music to end the show.
---Xplosion:
* Eric Young defeated Robbie E.
* Wes Brisco & Garrett Bischoff defeated Chavo & Hernandez.
August 8th Impact:
* Bully Ray cuts a promo about his steel cage match with Chris Sabin at Hardcore Justice. Brooke Hogan comes out with the contract and says Bully Ray will never get another title match if he loses.
* Jeff Hardy defeated Samoa Joe in a BFG series match.
* Mr. Anderson defeated Magnus in a BFG series match via disqualification after Bobby Roode interfered and hit Anderson with a chair.
* Tito Ortiz cut a promo, and Kurt Angle came out and told him that he respected him. Bully Ray then came out and said that he didn't respect either of them.
* James Storm, Gunner & ODB defeated Bromance and Mickie James. Gail Kim attacked ODB after the match.
* Kaz and Daniels fought to a double count out on purpose. Bobby Roode came out and announced that the three of them were forming a new faction.
* Chris Sabin and Kurt Angle (w/ Sting) defeated Team 3D.
---WWE has made a long-term commitment to their movies division and Michael Luisi, the head of WWE Studios.
On Friday, WWE filed their 10-Q statement with the SEC, which includes a revised Employment Agreement with Luisi.
The agreement, which is dated July 19 and was effective as of January 1, notes that Luisi will be paid a base annual salary of $577,500.
Luisi will be considered for a raise beginning in Calendar Year 2014 "based upon your prior year’s performance evaluation/annual performance review, within management’s sole discretion."
Luisi can earn more money through a "Studio Incentive Bonus Payment" plan, which creates an extra incentive for WWE Studios to produce movies that make money. WWE's agreement with Luisi notes that Luisi "shall also be eligible for a payment equivalent to a percentage of" WWE Studios's profit.
Luisi is also entitled to stock benefits available to other WWE executives and a $100,000 "One-Time Performance Stock Unit Award Grant." WWE describes this as being in addition to the Studio Incentive plan.
The One-Time Grant description reads: "This grant is contingent upon achieving a minimum FY2013 Studios (profit) target as set by (Vince McMahon) in his sole discretion, which may be lower than but not higher than the current FY2013 Studios profit target. The actual value you receive will depend on the number of PSUs (Performance Stock Units) earned and the price of WWE shares at the time the PSUs are released, but not below $100,000."
As part of Luisi's new employment agreement, WWE is paying for Luisi to permanently relocate to Los Angeles, California to head up the movie division. Should Luisi's employment be terminated before May 1, 2014, Luisi will have to reimburse the company for moving expenses.
---DirecTV will not be airing the "TNA One Night Only: TNA 10 Reunion" PPV. It was listed on DirecTV's channel guide & on DirecTV.com on Monday but was removed Friday Morning. All week I tried ordering the PPV in HD on DirecTV.com for $25 but it said "Not able to be ordered at this time, check back later" while the SD button on DirecTV.com would let you order the PPV for $15. During Impact last night I tried again with the same results. I tried after 12am this morning and DirecTV.com did not show any mention or page for the TNA PPV. At 6am the DirecTV channel guide no longer showed the PPV airing instead on channel 121(HD) it show "To Be Announced". Which is what it says when nothing is airing on that channel. The TNA PPV was removed on channel 122(SD) and replaced with a marathon of "Up the Skirt: Thongs Revealed". So if you ordered the PPV in SD and go to watch it tonight at 8pm you will tune in to another kind of T n' A. I called DirecTV and they said the PPV is not airing on DirecTV according to their computers. I'm guessing those who ordered in SD will get a refund.
So if you have DirecTV and want to watch tonight's TNA PPV you will have to order it on TNA's youtube page when it's up or go to a friends house who does not have DirecTV. On TNA's youtube page they uploaded TNA One Night Only Hardcore Justice 2 one week after it was originally premiered on PPV for $15, the other two TNA One Night Only PPVs prices were dropped to just $3 after the latest TNA ONS PPV was uploaded. So I'm guessing when TNA 10 Reunion is uploaded, Hardcore Justice 2 will drop to just $3 as well.

---Nickla Roberts known as 'The Perfect 10' Baby Doll in the NWA alongside Tully Blanchard in the 1980's, joined Inside The Ropes this past Thrusday. Here are some highlights:
Working with Tully against Dusty Rhodes:
I was very fortunate because Dusty liked me and even though he didn’t like Tully, we worked well together and I think that’s why Dusty worked with us because Tully knew how to work against Dusty and not take anything away from him. Dusty was a phenomenal athlete. More than once he’d do a standing dropkick just to show people he could do it. Everyone talks about Ric Flair, but Dusty was as much if not more over than Flair was. Dusty was more of a man’s man, son of the plumber. People just recognised with Dusty more than anyone else.
Thoughts on current crop of women in wrestling:
I liked Trish Stratus. She took it to a different level back in the day. Now with the girls, I love AJ, I don’t know what it is. But the look on her face and how she sells a match. I really am a big fan of hers. I like the Bellas. The Bellas are good. Really all the girls from Mickie James to ODB, Velvet Sky, there’s not a girl that isn’t a star. There’s so many stars, there’s really good opportunities for the girls too.
Thoughts on Dixie Carter running TNA compared to old school promoters like Fritz Von Erich & Bill Watts:
She loves wrestling. I think she truly loves what she does even though she may not have a clue as to the right way to do it. She has that love and passion and I think overall she wants to have an excellent product. I’m just not a big fan of Hogan and I’m not a big fan of Bischoff just because of what their track record of business is. I mean Hogan’s great in the ring, but business wise, he has a tendency to bring down promotions. With TNA, you kinda have to look at their numbers and look at their show....I want TNA to be successful.
I wanna see newer guys. I love Bully Ray to death, but if I see him open up that show one more time saying “Do you know who I am?” I don’t care who you are, I wanna see someone new! I don’t wanna see...and god bless him....I don’t wanna see a 50 year old Sting, I don’t wanna see Hogan, I don’t wanna see The Dudley Boyz. I saw those guys 20 years ago. I wanna see new guys, I wanna see Zema Ion, I wanna see the Joey Ryans, I wanna see the new guys coming up. I don’t wanna see stuff that I saw 20 or 30 years ago. There’s so many new stars that are out there, I don’t wanna see Hogan anymore. I saw Hogan 30 years ago, I’m tired of seeing Hogan. And Brooke Hogan, god bless her, she’s dumber than a bag of rocks. She could not do a promo to save her life. She can’t even get 4 sentences out without goofing it up. They need to get someone else different in there, they really do because people are turning it off, they don’t wanna see it anymore.
