www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/jerry-bruckheimer-says-top-gun-692449It has been 28 years since Top Gun first took to the skies, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer reveals that a sequel is close to becoming a reality. The producer told The Huffington Post that a follow-up to the Tom Cruise blockbuster, which was set at the Navy's elite fighter weapon school in San Diego during the Cold War, will reflect today's changing world of warfare. "We've been trying to get that movie made for 30 years, and I think we're getting closer and closer," Bruckheimer revealed in the interview. "Don [Simpson] and I tried to develop something, we didn't succeed. [Tom] Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn't succeed. Now we're back at it." The original film's director, Tony Scott, died in 2012; Top Gun 2 was one of three films on his plate before he passed away from an apparent suicide. "The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay," explained the producer. "It's just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he's very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that Paramount feels they can make the picture," he explained, adding that there is no director yet for the sequel.

variety.com/2014/film/news/top-gun-2-jungle-book-writer-1201301368/Justin Marks is in talks to script “Top Gun 2,” Paramount’s long-in-development sequel to the 1986 Tom Cruise movie. Jerry Bruckheimer, who moved his first-look deal to Paramount earlier this year, is producing with David Ellison’s Skydance. Skydance’s Dana Goldberg is exec producing. Should the sequel take flight, Cruise would reprise his iconic role as Maverick. Marks, who wrote Disney’s upcoming version of “The Jungle Book” that Jon Favreau is directing, would be the first writer to work on the script since Peter Craig (“The Town”) wrote a draft in 2012. He hinted about the new assignment in a Tweet on Sunday. Marks is also writing an adapation of “Federal Bureau of Physics” for Warner Bros. He is repped by CAA, Madhouse Entertainment and Lichter Grossman. News was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter.
