Brian K. Vaughan Inks Overall Deal With Legendary Entertainment
Bestselling and award-winning comic book creator, television and film writer Brian K. Vaughan has signed a three-year overall deal with Legendary Entertainment. This is the first such deal for Vaughan and one of the first major deals Legendary has made since the overhaul of the TV division and arrival of Nick Pepper as president.
Under the pact, Legendary will adapt several of Vaughan’s creator-owned comics, as well as produce exclusive, original projects developed by Vaughan for film and television across traditional and non-traditional platforms.
“Through truly inspired storytelling, Brian has created immersive, compelling worlds that are devoured by fans worldwide,” stated Nick Pepper, President of Legendary Television Studios. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to work with Brian to bring his visions and extraordinary library of work to the screen.”
Added Vaughan: “Legendary was instrumental in helping to revolutionize the way the world thought of ‘comic-book movies,’ so it’s a tremendous honor to work with them on adaptations of some of my and my talented collaborators’ past and current comics, and I’m looking forward to hopefully creating a few wholly original stories with them, as well.”
Vaughan is a New York Times bestselling writer and co-creator of several critically acclaimed comics and graphic novels that have received 14 Eisner Awards, 14 Harvey Awards and a Hugo Award for his work with artist Fiona Staples on their series Saga. His other comic books include Paper Girls with artist Cliff Chiang, Ex Machina with artist Tony Harris, Barrier with artist Marcos Martin, and We Stand on Guard with artist Steve Skroce.
In TV, he serves as an executive producer of the adaptation of FX drama pilot Y: The Last Man starring Diane Lane, and as an executive consultant of his comic book Runaways, currently in its second season at Hulu, with Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage adapting and Marvel producing. Vaughan was nominated for an Emmy Award for his first work in television, as a writer on the hit series Lost. He also developed Stephen King’s Under the Dome for Steven Spielberg and CBS, executive producing and co-showrunning its first season. On the feature side, his first spec script Roundtable was purchased in a bidding war after landing on the 2008 Black List.
Legendary’s films in production include Godzilla vs. Kong and Dune, with Godzilla: King of the Monsters and the live-action Detective Pikachu set to be released by Warner Bros. in May. Legendary’s Television division is currently prepping a second season of Lost in Space starring Molly Parker and Toby Stephens and the first season of a Pacific Rim anime series for Netflix; as well as the first season of Carnival Row, a fantasy noir drama starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, from Rene Echevarria & Travis Beacham for Amazon.
Vaughan is repped by Verve and attorney Julian Zajfen of Ziffren Brittenham.
