Solo: A Star Wars Story Will Resurrect a Classic Star Destroyer Concept
When Disney takes the Star Wars franchise back in time for Solo: A Star Wars Story, Ron Howard’s movie will be resurrecting a classic Star Destroyer design from the early days of the franchise.
Decades of Star Wars movies have unveiled ship designs for the likes of the Millennium Falcon, TIE fighters and X-Wings, but it looks like Howard is going back to the start to bring a long-forgotten idea to the Han Solo origin movie. Alongside Han’s first flight in the Falcon, fans are promised that the Star Destroyers (of sorts) will play a part when Solo hits theaters in May.
At the New York Toy Fair, Mattel unveiled a host of new products tying into Solo. One of the most interesting was something called the Arrestor Cruiser, which is apparently a take on an original design for the Star Destroyers. As for the name, the Arrestor Cruiser could hint towards how Han Solo and Chewbacca meet if one of them is spending time behind bars for their crimes.
Although the Arrestor Cruiser and another vehicle called the Imperial Hauler appeared at Toy Fair, original trilogy concept artist Colin Cantwell had already given us a preview only last week. A New Hope went with a chunkier arrowhead look for Star Destroyers in 1977 which has become synonymous with the series, but now you can see what Cantwell first had in mind.
The design for the Star Destroyers pitched to George Lucas decades ago is now apparently the basis for the Arrestor Cruiser. With a sleeker look than the Destroyers we have seen so far in the movies, the Arrestor Cruise features some pretty distinctive satellite dishes on the front and the sides. His artwork posted on Instagram also showed his first thoughts on what the Empire’s attack ships would look like before he crafted the TIE fighters.
Directed by Ron Howard from a script by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. They’re joined by Thandie Newton as Val, Phoebe Waller-Bridge L3-37, Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos and Woody Harrelson as Tobias Beckett. The film hits theaters on May 25.
