Warner Bros. Wins Bidding War for Sci-Fi Spec 'Harry's All Night Hamburgers' (Exclusive)
The script has been described as having shades of 'Back to the Future' and 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.'
Wrapping up a deal as the holiday weekend begins, Warner Bros. picked up the sci-fi spec Harry’s All Night Hamburgers from scribes Steve Desmond and Michael Sherman in a competitive situation.
Andrew Lazar, whose credits include American Sniper, will produce via his Mad Chance production banner.
The script centers on a down-on-his-luck high school senior who discovers that the old roadside diner outside of town is secretly a hangout for parallel universe travelers. He sets off on a mind-bending adventure across the multiverse that takes him beyond his wildest dreams. The script has been described as being reminiscent of Back to the Future and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
The story is based on 1987 Hugo Award-winning short story titled Why I Left Harry’s All-Night Hamburgers by Lawrence Watt-Evans. That story focused on young man working at the inter-dimensional diner.
Newly-minted Warners exec Cate Adams, who was just promoted to vp, production, will oversee for the studio, along with Paul Perez.
Benjamin Simpson championed the project at Mad Chance and will serve as co-producer.
Desmond and Sherman were just hired to adapt Paul Tremblay’s The Cabin at the End of the World for FilmNation. Their script Orb made the 2016 Black List as well as the top of the 2016 Blood List. The duo's previous script On Your Doorstep was on the 2013 Blood List and is now in turnaround from Treehouse Pictures.
Desmond and Sherman are repped by APA and Ziffren Brittenham. Watt-Evans is repped by APA and Scovil Galen Ghosh Literary Agency.
