Justin Chon, Filmmaker Behind ‘Gook’ At Sundance, Will Direct Next Feature For Macro
EXCLUSIVE: Justin Chon, the multi-hyphenate actor-writer-director whose film Gook won the Next category at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is partnering with MACRO on his next original feature. Chon will write and direct a yet untitled feature whose storyline is being kept under wraps for a late 2018 start. He was nominated last month as a “Director To Watch” at the 33rd Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards.
Charles D. King, Kim Roth and Poppy Hanks will produce. Macro is the company behind Mudbound, Roman J. Israel, Esq., and Fences, to name a few.
Chon’s Gook, in which he also starred, followed the story of Eli and Daniel, two Korean American brothers who own a struggling women’s shoe store and have an unlikely friendship with an 11-year-old Kamilla. On the first day of the 1992 L.A. riots, the trio must defend their store — and contemplate the meaning of family, their personal dreams and the future.
Chon, who is perhaps best known for his role as Eric Yorkie in the Twilight film franchise, can next be seen in his series regular role as Jordan Monroe in Greg Berlanti’s upcoming ABC drama, Deception.
Launched in January 2015 by former William Morris Endeavor (WME) partner King, MACRO is a multi-platform media company focused on the new majority multicultural market. The company’s first major studio feature was Fences, directed by and starring Denzel Washington and which won Viola Davis Best Supporting Actress. In November, 2017 MACRO had two major releases: Mudbound, directed by Dee Rees and starring Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Jason Mitchell and Mary J. Blige and co-financed by MACRO which was acquired by Netflix in the highest sale of Sundance and also Roman J. Israel, Esq., written and directed by Dan Gilroy with Denzel Washington and Colin Farrell starring; it was co-financed by MACRO along with Sony Pictures.
The next feature film for MACRO is the director Boots Riley-helmed Sorry To Bother You (with Significant Productions). It will debut next year at Sundance.
Chon is repped by APA and attorney Scott Whitehead.
