Making its second deal of the festival, Sony Pictures Classics has acquired worldwide rights to Martha Stephens and Aaron Katz’s road-trip comedy “Land Ho!” which premiered Jan. 19 in Sundance’s Next category.
Sony Classics plans to release the film Stateside this year.
“Land Ho!” stars Paul Eenhoorn (“This Is Martin Bonner”), alongside newcomer Earl Lynn Nelson as a pair of retirees, who travel across Iceland in a wild attempt to reclaim their youth. Mynette Louie, Sara Murphy and Christina Jennings produced the film, with David Gordon Green, Julie Parker Benello, Dan Cogan, Geralyn Dreyfous and Wendy Ettinger exec producing.
“That rare bird of a movie, fresh and funny and moving, featuring the most memorable two characters you’ve experienced in a long, long time,” Sony Classics said in a statement. The distrib bought “Whiplash” earlier in the festival.
The deal was negotiated by Andrew Herwitz, president of Film Sales Company, along with Andre Des Rochers of Gray Krauss Stratford Sandler Des Rochers LLP, on behalf of the filmmakers.
