The novel is being adapted into a film by director Dee Rees, who earned raves at the Sundance Film Festival in January for “Mudbound.” That drama, also based on a popular book, sold to Netflix for $12.5 million and will be getting a hefty Oscar campaign this fall. “The Last Thing He Wanted” was optioned last year by Elevated’s Cassian Elwes, who also served as a producer on “Mudbound.” The thriller has a strong following among Didion fans, as it tells the story of a Washington Post reporter who quits her job at the paper to stumble into a job as an arms dealer for covert government forces. Marco Villabos will write the screenplay. The Fyzz Facility will develop and finance the movie. “This work is one of my favorite Joan Didion novels and is a brilliant and layered piece of fiction,” Rees said in a statement. “I am forever attracted to interesting, unexpected characters and Didion is one of the greatest masters of the form. I’m so excited to be able to interpret this literary masterpiece.” Rees previously directed the 2011 indie darling “Pariah” and “Bessie” for HBO.
