Toronto: Netflix Nabs World Rights to 'Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond'
Chris Smith's take on Jim Carrey playing the infamous comic Andy Kaufman bowed in Venice before moving to TIFF.
Netflix had grabbed worldwide rights to Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond — Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton, the streaming company announced Monday at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The film is Chris Smith’s take on actor Jim Carrey’s time portraying famed and complicated comedian Andy Kaufman. The Vice Documentary Films production bowed last week at the Venice Film Festival and was produced by Spike Jonze and Vice Films’ Danny Gabai and Brendan Fitzgerald.
In 1999, Milos Forman cast Carrey to play Kaufman in his biopic Man on the Moon. What followed was an intensely bizarre and emotional film production.
Surrounded by Kaufman’s friends and family on set, Carrey thoroughly “became" Kaufman and, alternately, Tony Clifton, Kaufman’s obnoxious lounge-singer alter ego. Much like Kaufman’s comedy, Carrey’s acting took on a performance-art quality during filming.
Carrey never broke character on set, and the cast and the crew referred to him as either "Andy" or "Tony," depending on whom he was embodying, as he had created complete and separate identities for each.
Executive producers of Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond are Eddy Moretti, Shane Smith, Tony Clifton, Michael Kronish, Jim Czarnecki and Nicole Montez.
