This afternoon, Guardians of the Galaxy writer-director James Gunn took to Facebook to answer some fan questions. During the live Q&A session, he revealed that Nova has been discussed for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Facebook livestream, which was held to promote Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on home release, allowed one fan to ask if Nova — and, in particular, Richard Rider — could ever join the cosmic side of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.
Gunn’s reply was promising. “Yes, definitely. Nova comes up occasionally as someone we might use,” he revealed. “One of the things I’m doing with creating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it will take place after the next two Avengers movies, and it will help to set up the next 10-20 years of Marvel movies. It’s going to really expand the cosmic universe. We’re going to be setting up new characters. It will be the last movie of this version of the Guardians of the Galaxy.”
As such, it sounds as if Nova does indeed have a possible future in Marvel Studios’ ever-expanding franchise. However, whether that’s in a solo movie or in a different iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy is yet to be seen.
Debuting in Marv Wolfman and John Buscema’s Nova #1 in 1976, Richard Rider was chosen by Rhomann Dey to succeed him in the rank of Nova Prime after his world was destroyed. As a Nova, Rider was gifted with improved strength, invulnerability, the ability to fly and a uniform with a life support system and used these abilities to defend New York, before eventually joining the Nova Corps. Rhomann Dey appeared in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film as played by John C. Reilly.
You can watch the entire livestream below, where Gunn discusses David Bowie, the music in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Avengers: Infinity War and plenty of other topics.
Director James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Baby Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Chris Sullivan as Taserface, Sean Gunn as Kraglin and Kurt Russell as Ego. The film is now available in all formats.
