WWE RAW LIVE RESULTS: THE NIGHT AFTER SUMMERSLAM
BY JEFF HAMLIN | @hamlin37 | AUG 21, 2017 4:45 PM
The Big Takeaway: John Cena returned to Raw and immediately teased a program with Roman Reigns. First, Reigns and Cena defeated The Miz and Samoa Joe in the main event. Braun Strowman laid out Brock Lesnar in an one-on-one confronation, giving Lesnar two powerslams. Lesnar will defend the Universal Championship against Strowman at No Mercy. Best match of the show was Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose defeating the Hardy Boys.
Show Recap:
Lesnar and Paul Heyman came out to a huge reaction. Heyman said last night was the first time ever that Lesnar has ever been taken out on a stretcher, but Lesnar is a conquerer and what conquerer he did. And the end of the day, despite a conspiracy by the WWE to take the Universal Championship off of him, Lesnar not only prevailed, but he pinned Reigns. Of course, that got a huge pop. Heyman said in the future, if there is anyone to be conquered, it will be Lesnar doing it.
Braun Strowman came out and looked at Lesnar face-to-face. There was a loud Strowman chant. Lesnar screamed at Strowman "You're looking at the champ." Strowman grabbed Lesnar by the throat and tried to give him a choke slam. Lesnar got free and came off the ropes, but Strowman kneed Lesnar in the midsection and gave Lesnar a powerslam. Strowman gave Lesnar another powerslam for good measure and left him laying.
Enzo Amore defeated Big Cass by referee's stoppage in a Brooklyn Street Fight (8:50)
Big Cass went for a big boot but Enzo Amore pulled the rope down, and Cass' right leg landed in a horrible angle on the floor. Cass tried to continue the match, but his leg gave out before he could attempt the Empire Elbow. The referee stopped the match and ordered a trainer to help Cass, who cursed loudly while on the apron (which was bleeped out). Cass got all of the offense before the match was stopped. Even after suffering the injury, Amore tried to pick up a chair, but Cass stepped on it with his left leg. Then he collapsed to the canvas attempting the elbow. Despite being buried for weeks, crowd was staunchly for Amore, who did prematch micwork saying that he and Cass started their friendship 15 years ago. He said that Cass had broken bread with his mother, then he broke their hearts by turning on him.
Emma was backstage and mouthed off to Dana Brooke about how much coverage Banks' coverage was getting from the mainstream media. Emma started talking about how Nia Jax was a dimwit who was being led around by Alexa Bliss. What Emma didn't know was Jax was standing behind her hearing everything. Emma faces Jax later tonight, and Jax said by the time the night was over, the hashtag would read "Give Emma CPR."
Nia Jax defeated Emma (1:50)
Jax defeated Emma with a Samoan Drop. Booker T said "Emma found herself in the ring with an opposing opposition." Corey Graves said "Wouldn't opposing opposition be friendship?" Booker didn't sound happy with that comeback.
Elias was back. He said he looked at the eclipse earlier today and it made everything crystal clear. He wrote a song about R-Truth because more of the fans were already ashamed about living in Brooklyn. Crowd started clapping along to the song, which Elias had to talk down.
Elias defeated R-Truth (1:22)
Elias sold most of the way before winning with drift away. This time, Booker had to be told by Michael Cole to get the microphone closer to his mouth so he could be heard.
Kurt Angle came out and introduced John Cena, who got a huge response. Crowd went from chanting "Kurt Angle sucks" to singing "John Cena sucks." Cena let the crowd roar with dueling chants for a little bit. Cena asked "Why am I here?" He said he saw Angle at SummerSlam, who asked Cena if he wanted to come to Monday Night Raw. Cena said yes, not because SmackDown Live is bad, but because he wanted to stand in the ring on Raw and be face-to-face with a certain WWE superstar.
Reigns came out to much louder boos. Some fans chanted "You both suck." Cena said Reigns was exactly who he was looking for. Reigns said the only time Cena looks for him is when he runs his mouth on Twitter. Now that Cena was in his yard, Reigns asked Cena if Cena was going to run Cena's mouth to his face. Crowd started chanting for the Undertaker. Cena said it seems that the Raw audience will hold a bit of a grudge sometimes. Cena said he didn't come here to talk. Cena took his shirt off.
The Miz came out with Bo Dallas, Curtis Axel and Maryse. A "Thank you, Miz" chant could be heard. Cena tried to crack Miz up with the way Miz pronounced the "Barclays" Center. Miz asked how many moments do these two get. Fans started cheering. Miz said in life, you're always told if you work hard, then your moment will come. Miz said he was sick of waiting for his moment while Reigns and Cena get their moment week after week. Miz was a total babyface by this point. Miz said Angle thinks Raw needs an addition while the Intercontinental Champion rides the pine at SummerSlam. Miz asked the fans if Raw needs Cena. Most fans said no. Cena pretended he was going to leave, but Miz told him he wasn't done talking to Cena. Miz said Cena turns his moments into a joke, then looked at Reigns and said if this was Reigns yard, but it was his show.
Miz started heeling on the fans saying the fans didn't know what they wanted because he was the only champion in this ring. Miz said he wanted the respect he deserves and he's earned it for 12 you know what years. Miz asked "Where is my moment?" Some fans chanted "You deserve it." Cena said he had an idea, Miz and one of the members of the Miztourage could face him and his new tag team partner, Reigns. Miz said that wasn't a moment for him, that was a moment for Cena. Miz said he was in a three-piece suit clearly not ready to fight.
Then Samoa Joe walked down to "Joe" chants. Joe glared at Cena and said he had an opinion about this situation. If anyone is going to be Miz's partner, it is going to be him, whether Miz likes it or not because he was sick of Reigns saying this was his yard. Joe said he owes Reigns. Joe started to address Cena, but flattened him with a right. Reigns took out Dallas and Axel while Joe brawled with Cena. For a moment, Cena had Joe up in the AA, but Joe got behind Cena in the Coquina Clutch. Reigns sent Joe out of the ring with a Superman punch. With Cena and Reigns alone in the ring, the crowd was united with a "You both suck" chant that you could have heard in Madison Square Garden.
Cedric Alexander, Gran Metalik, Rich Swann and Mustafa Ali defeated Drew Gulak, Tony Nese, Noam Dar and Ariya Daivari (8:42)
Cedric Alexander pinned Tony Nese with a lumbar check after a springboard enzuigiri. Gran Metalik did a moonsault plancha onto Drew Gulak and Ariya Daivari. Crowd did the wave midway through the match and started chanting "This match sucks" before the finish. Noam Dar didn't want to tag in to face Rich Swann, so Nese tagged in. Gulak has a new haircut that makes him look like any 1980s WWE jobber. Nese's new gimmick is he has 12 pack abs.
Neville did an interview with Charly Caruso, who said people were surprised that Akira Tozawa defeated him to win the WWE Cruiserweight Championship last week. But almost as surprising was Neville won the championship last week. Neville ran down Tozawa. Titus O'Neil and Tozawa showed up and said Tozawa wanted a rematch on 205 Live tomorrow night.
Jason Jordan talked with Angle backstage. Jordan said he didn't wany any prefrerential treatment, but he wants a match tonight. Angle said Miz has a match already booked tonight. Jordan asked for FInn Balor. Angle asked him if he was ready for that type of competition, then agreed to the match.
Ambrose and Rollins came out as the new Raw Tag Team Champions. Ambrose said he never thought this would happen again and admitted he slept with the championship beside him last night and walked around town with it all day. Rollins seemed surprised by that but said tonight was a celebration. Ambrose said they knew Cesaro and Sheamus would want a rematch soon. They waited for Cesaro and Sheamus to come out, but instead Matt and Jeff Hardy showed up. Tons of "delete" chants. Matt Hardy said "yes" like his Broken character. Jeff congratulated Ambrose and Rollins. Matt said he and Jeff knew better than anyone that sometimes brothers fight, but when they put those differences aside, it is a "beautiful" thing. Matt challenged them to a match. Rollins said he and Ambrose grew up idolzing the Hardy Boyz. Matt said they have revolutionized the tag team industry for over 25 years and they want to do it again tonight. Rollins said "Let's do the you know what thing" like he was B.G. James in 2002 TNA.
Raw Tag Team Champions Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose defeated The Hardy Boyz in a nontitle match (16:48)
Really good match where Rollins pinned Jeff after Rollins gave Jeff the Rainmaker Knee, followed by Ambrose's Dirty Deeds. Matt hit Ambrose with the Side Effect. Jeff tagged in and went for the Swanton, but Ambrose got the knees up. Earlier, Jeff gave Ambrose and Rollins Poetry in Motion to the floor. Jeff got back in the ring trying to hit Ambrose off the top rope, but Rollins ran in to push Ambrose out of the way. Both teams worked as faces and the crowd got into the match after 10 minutes, which isn't easy during the third hour.
Miz and Joe shared the same locker room backstage. Miz couldn't shut up about strategy while Joe constantly stared at a spot on the wall. Finally, Joe told Miz to shut up. Joe ordered Dallas and Axel to remain a constant presence on the outside and Miz to do the annoying thing he always does outside the ring.
They officially announced Lesnar vs. Strowman for the Universal Championship at No Mercy.
Banks came out as the new Raw Women's Champion. Banks admitted she may be from Boston, but for the last three years she's left her heart in Brooklyn. From the time in 2014 where she and Bayley tore the house down, to last year when she faced Charlotte. Banks gave a shoutout to Ric Flair. She said Raw doesn't need a Goddess, and told Bliss she doesn't need Jax to watch her back. Banks got some boos.
Bliss came out and laughed over the fact that Banks could defend a championship. Bliss said Banks has never defended that championship because Banks has held the championship four times, but every time she defends the title she loses it. Banks shot back that Bliss tapped out to her last night. Banks knew that Bliss has her rematch clause and challenged her to use it right now. Bliss said maybe she should, but she won't because Brooklyn doesn't deserve to see a Bliss championship celebration. Bliss said next week she will get her rematch. Bliss said after she beat Banks next week, Banks won't be known as the "Legit Boss," she will be known as the "Legit Loser."
Finn Balor defeated Jason Jordan (11:50)
Balor won with a sling blade, a dropkick and the Coup de Grace. Jordan attempted the hoist neckbreaker, but Balor turned it into a crossbody before the finish. Crowd was more interesting in bouncing a beach ball around. The beach ball fell to ringside while Balor delivered a running penalty kick to Jordan, which fortunately was on the other side of the ring. Needless to say, that affected the heat, which wasn't much. Jordan got no reaction coming out, but Balor's response was surprisingly lackluster.
John Cena and Roman Reigns defeated The Miz and Samoa Joe (12:57)
Cena pinned Miz with the AA. Before the finish, Joe, who was in the ring illegally, put Cena in the Coquina Clutch. Reigns went to hit Joe with the Superman Punch, but he hit Cena when Joe moved. Joe tackled Reigns to the floor. Miz looked at Cena like he was about to finally get his win over Cena and attempted the Skull Crushing Finale before Cena predictably reversed it. Afterwards, Cena looked a Reigns suspiciously. Reigns told Cena "my bad." Crowd got another beach ball out and started playing with it. Cena engaged in their fun. The cameras caught a security guard taking the beach ball in the lower concourse. Then the fans started doing the wave, which Cena also had fun with. Dallas interfered, giving Cena a clothesline. Later, Reigns took out Dallas and Axel with Superman punches.
