WWE RAW LIVE RESULTS: SUMMERSLAM GO-HOME SHOW
BY JEFF HAMLIN | @hamlin37 | AUG 14, 2017 3:56 PM
The Big Takeaway: Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose reunited after briefly brawling with each other. Sheamus and Cesaro ran down to attack them, but Rollins and Ambrose fought them off, then pounded their fists together. Ambrose and Rollins face Sheamus and Cesaro for the Raw Tag Team Championship at SummerSlam. Two matches that, at one point, were billed for SummerSlam took place on this show. Akira Tozawa defeated Neville for the WWE Crusierweight Championship. Bray Wyatt pinned Finn Balor clean. Postmatch, Wyatt dumped what appeared to be a bucket of blood on Balor. Michael Cole later said it was an "acidic liquid substance." Later, Balor asked Kurt Angle for a rematch at SummerSlam, where his Demon King persona will return. Sasha Banks defeated Nia Jax to earn a title shot against Alexa Bliss for the Raw Women's Championship at SummerSlam.
Show Recap:
Ambrose came out and said he knows many people are wondering what's going on with him and Rollins. He was wondering the same thing himself and called out Rollins to answer the questions. Rollins came out. Ambrose said he was sick and tired of playing games and asked what was Rollins doing? Rollins said Ambrose was the one playing game because one week Ambrose saves him and the next week Ambrose doesn't. Rollins said Ambrose says he can't trust Rollins, but he can look in Ambrose's eyes and tell that Ambrose was lying. Rollins said if they reunited, they can run this place. So Rollins said he was done playing games and stuck his fist out. Again, the crowd rose to its feet begging Ambrose to shake his hand.
Ambrose said Rollins has to be kidding. Ambrose said he stuck his fist out last week and Rollins made him look like a fool. Ambrose thought, for just a minute, that maybe he could trust Rollins. Rollins said he didn't blame Ambrose because sometimes he doesn't trust himself. Maybe it was a foolish idea, but maybe it wasn't. When they were fighting against other people, there was no one that could touch them. Rollins said maybe too much has happened and he was done playing game. Rollins started to leave, but Ambrose pulled him back and stuck out his fist. Rollins held up his fist, then dropped it by his side. Ambrose pushed Rollins, they woundd up in a shoving much, which turned to fisticuffs with Ambrose punching Rollins from the mount. Rollins got up and they tumbled to the floor.
Cesaro and Sheamus ran down and jumped Ambrose, throwing him into the front row. Then they threw Rollins into the barricad and into the ring and put the boots to him. Ambrose ran back in the ring, but Cesaro tackled him to the mat and Sheamus spunched him in the midsection several times. Rollins flew off the top rope over Cesaro and onto Sheamus. Rollins and Ambrose threw hockey punches on Cesaro and Sheamus. Rollins clotheslined Sheamus over the top rope, and Ambrose joined Rollins in giving Cesaro a double clothesline to the floor. Crowd chanted 'yes."
Rollins and Ambrose glared at each other. Ambrose and Rollins finally touched fists like they were Zan and Jayna from the old SuperFriends cartoon to a massive pop.
Kurt Angle walked out and ordered Cesaro and Sheamus to defend the Raw Tag Team titles against Rollins and Ambrose at SummerSlam.
Later tonight, Lesnar, Strowman, Reigns and Joe will be in the ring at the same time.
Michael Cole made an announcement that Ric Flair underwent successful surgery today in Atlanta, but he isn't out of the woods yet. He didn't mention anything about Flair being in a medically induced coma. Booker T mentioned when he won the WCW World Championship in 2000 (from Jeff Jarrett), Flair said he was passing the torch to Booker. Now, Booker wants to pass it back to Flair.
Sasha Banks defeated Nia Jax by submission to become the #1 contender for the Raw Women's Championship (14:53)
There was a chair set up on a platform on the entrance where Bliss came out to watch the match. Corey Graves said Bliss was watching the match from her throne. The chair looked like something a lifeguard would sit in to watch the ocean.
Since it was Banks' hometown, crowd was hot like it was a NXT Takeover show. Jax went for a superplex, but Banks escaped and went for a sunset flip power bomb, but Jax wouldn't budge. So Banks kicked Jax's legs out from under her. Jax gave Banks a big boot, but Banks recovered and put her in the Bank Statement. Jax picked Banks up and over her shoulder, but Banks gave her a DDT, then put her back in the Bank Statement. Jax tapped out.
Banks jumped off the apron for a huracanrana, but Jax caught her and slung her into the barricade. Jax put Banks in a bearhug. Jax gave Banks a legdrop for a two count. Jax used the double chicken wing, but Banks turned that into a victory roll for a near fall. Banks got on Jax's back and tried to sink in a rear naked choke, but Jax gave her a Samoan Drop and covered her, but Banks put her finger on the ropes at two. Jax delievered another Samoan Drop, but Banks rolled out of the ring, which got a pop because the fans wanted Banks to win.
Angle watched from backstage and talked with Jeff and Matt Hardy. Angle said the Hardys would not be getting their hands on the Revival at SummerSlam because of Scott Dawson's injury. Matt said that was unfortunate because they always have a "delightful" time with the Revival. Crowd popped for that. The Miz, Bo Dallas, Curtis Axel and Maryse walked in. Angle told Axel he didn't face Jason Jordan last week after Lesnar gave him an F-5 last week, but Axel would face him tonight. Miz wanted to know what Angle was going to do to punish Lesnar. Angle said absolutely nothing. Miz told Angle that Axel wasn't going to face Jordan tonight, he was. Angle said that was fine. A referee ran in and said that Finn Balor and Bray Wyatt were fighting and Angle ran away.
Wyatt and balor were exchanging punches after a commercial. Angle ran in and screamed at them to wait for SummerSlam. Balor said they didn't have to wait until SummerSlam and ran toward Wyatt again. After they were pulled apart again, Angle said they weren't going to wait because Wyatt and Balor were going to wrestle tonight.
Elias was in the ring to sing again. He said he was walking around Fenway Park today, which was a dump. It inspired him to write this song. "The people here are disgusting/the clam chowder is much worse/I can't wait to leave this city because this place is wicked cursed." R-Truth interrupted him and started rapping "What's Up?" Elias jumped Truth as he was getting in the ring and gave him Drift Away. There was no referee in the ring. Elias grabbed his guitar and teased hitting Truth, but just held it over his shoulder and walked away.
The shark cage that Enzo Amore will be in on Sunday was in the ring as Big Cass came out for a promo. Cass tried to start his dialogue six times, but got booed louder each time and had to stop. He appeared pleased with himself about how much heat he had. He said this Sunday, it will be Big Cass vs. the Big Show in the Big Apple. Cass said Show will bring Amore, his new best friend, to SummerSlam. Cass said the reason why the two were friends is because Enzo needs the Big Show to watch his back whenever Enzo pisses someone off backstage, which is every single day. Cass said Show needs Enzo in order to stay relevant. Cass made fun of Enzo saying no one could understand what Enzo was saying half the time. Cass said he was the new 7-footer on the block and Big Show knows he can't beat him without Enzo. Cass said Enzo can run his mouth all he wants on Sunday, but he can't do anything about the fact that Enzo would get a bird's eye view as he destroys Big Show piece by piece. Cass said he would prove he's the best big man in the game today.
Enzo came out and made fun of Cass having to restart his interview. Enzo said Cass was rambling like a man who had been knocked out two weeks in a row. Cass said Enzo always ran his mouth and if Enzo had something to say, say it to his face. Enzo asked Cass if he was seeing stars, and said Cass was looking at him so he must see a star. Show came out. Show got in the ring with the cage in the middle of the ring. Cass stood behind it. Enzo jumped on the apron, Cass knocked him off. Then Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows ran in, but Show threw Cass into the cage, clotheslined Anderson and then Gallows. Show tried to give Anderson and Gallows a double choke slam, but Cass hit him with the big boot. Cass, Anderson and Gallows stomped on Show. Gallows then wrapped a belt around Show's right arm. Gallows dragged Show's arm across the edge of the cage and Cass slammed the door across the arm. Cass also gave Enzo his weekly big boot across the face. Cass and Anderson stomped on Show's arm until the referees came out to stop it. Odd that Cass didn't get nearly as much heat after the angle as he did before it.
Akira Tozawa defeated Neville to win the WWE Cruiserweight Championship (11:24)
Akira Tozawa hit a spin kick and tried to hit the senton bomb, but Neville got up. Neville used the referee as a shield, then put Tozawa in the Rings of Saturn. Tozawa turned it into a pinning combination, but Neville kicked out. Neville pulled Tozawa into the turnbuckles and went for the Red Arrow, but missed. Tozawa won the championship with the Senton Bomb. Titus O'Neil went wild after the win, and Apollo Crews came out to celebrate. O'Neil carried Tozawa around on his shoulders.
Neville gave Tozawa a vertical suplex on the floor during a commercial, then hit a missile dropkick. Tozawa came back with a back suplex, followed by consecutive topes. Neville battled back with a superplex where both men were on the top rope. Fans weren't into it, which was disappointing because this show started with easily the hottest crowd since WrestleMania season.
A doctor told Show backstage that his right hand (his knockout punch hand) appears to be broken. Enzo tried to talk Show out off facing Cass, but Show would hear none of it. He said he's faced bigger while hurting much more than what Cass did to him tonight.
Emma talked with Mickie James backstage. Emma was mad that Banks was the one facing Bliss for the championship. Emma claimed to have started the women's revolution but she just watches while women come from NXT and, looking at James, back from who knows where and gets a chance ahead of her. James said Emma didn't deserve a title shot because she tapped out to Banks last week and challenged Emma to a match tonight. Emma accepted.
Bray Wyatt defeated Finn Balor (11:28)
Wyatt gave Balor a DDT on the apron, and followed with a swinging reverse STO. After Wyatt hit a lunging shoulder block into the chest, Balor caught the sling blade. Wyatt came back and swept Balor's leg, then hit a senton. Balor appeared to hurt his ribs and was slow getting up. Wyatt went for Sister Abigail, but Balor tripped him and nailed a double stomp. Wyatt rolled out of the ring, but Balor ran out and gave him a drop kick. Balor went for the Coup de Grace, but Wyatt crotched him on the ropes and hit Sister Abigail for the clean pin.
Wyatt gave Balor another Sister Abigail after the match and told everyone to follow the buzzards. Wyatt then appeared with a bucket in the ring as Balor was slumped in the corner unconscious. Balor dumped blood all over Balor, who woke up and rolled around the ring. Wyatt sang "He's got the whole world in his hands," as Balor was covered in blood wondering helplessly across the canvas. Cole came back after the break and said Wyatt didn't use real blood, but some sort of acidic liquid.
Mickie James defeated Emma (4:06)
James defeated Emma with a Mick Kick to no response.
Balor, still with acidic liquid on him, walked out of Angle's office. Charly Caruso, looking as only as she can look, asked him what the meeting was about. Balor said he's got a rematch Sunday against Wyatt. Balor said Wyatt claims Wyatt has demons, and Wyatt will find out Balor has demons of his own. Later, it was officially announced the Demon King will be back at SummerSlam to face Wyatt.
Jason Jordan defeated the Miz by DQ (1:32)
Jordan came out with new music and got mild boos. Jordan dominated Miz and was about to attempt his hoist neckbreaker when Axel and Dallas ran in. Jeff and Matt Hardy came out to clean house, with Jeff giving Miz Poetry in Motion. Jordan gave Miz a release belly-to-belly suplex. This led to Angle ordering a six-man match during the break.
Jason Jordan and the Hardy Boyz defeated the Miz, Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel (14:33)
Jordan didn't sell very much and looked strong the entire match. Matt got the first hot tag and gave Axel the side effect. Dallas distracted Matt for the second round of heat as Axel hit him from behind. Jeff got the 2nd hot tag after Matt clotheslined Miz. Jeff did a sliding kick to the knees of Miz and Axel on the apron, and gave Dallas the Whisper in the Wind. Jeff gave Dallas the Twist of Fate, but Axel made the save. Jordan delivered the hoist neckbreaker on Miz, then gave Dallas the overhead belly-to-belly, while Matt hit Dallas with the Twist of Fate right into Jeff's Swanton for the pin.
Tozawa will have a championship celebration on 205 Live tomorrow night.
Angle was in the ring for the confrontation with Lesnar, Reigns, Strowman and Joe. There were security guards around ringside. Lesnar and Paul Heyman came out with Heyman scowling at Angle. Heyman grabbed the microphone and did his usual introduction for Lesnar. Heyman said Angle was trying to squeeze one last rating out of Lesnar by setting up this "face-to-face-to-face-to-champion's face" confrontation. Heyman called Joe a "a Samoan rip-off artist." Heyman said all hell was going to break loose tonight and said Lesnar was in a bad mood. Heyman said Lesnar was willing to listen to ideas for his future that don't necessarily include WWE, which led the WWE to force him into a match against the top three contenders, which makes it easier to get Lesnar out of the equation and have someone escape with the Universal championship. Heyman told Angle that concept sucks. Heyman says when the night comes to conquer the beast, and that night was a long way away, it will be on a night that someone conquers Lesnar. That will be the fans' guy, but that person won't be Samoa Joe. It won't be Strowman, though Heyman said he has all the tools to be champion and is a monster among men. But this Sunday, the beast will slay the monster.
Heyman then directed his attention to Reigns, the man who retired the Undertaker. Heyman said Reigns believes this is his yard, but as long as Lesnar is champion, Reigns' yard is in Lesnar's house, and rent is due this Sunday. Heyman repeated if Lesnar loses the championship this Sunday, Heyman and Lesnar will leave the WWE. If that happens "you might as well lock this beast in a cage, hint, hint." Heyman said the other scenario was Lesnar winning on Sunday, which will prove he has undersold the greatness of Lesnar over the years.
Joe came out to "Joe" chants. Joe stared at Lesnar and said he told Lesnar from day one he doesn't fear Lesnar. Joe said at SummerSlam when he comes for the Universal Championship, he will rip it from Lesnar's hands after he puts Lesnar to sleep in the ring.
Strowman walked down. Strowman said in case Lesnar didn't know, he was always the last man standing, ask Reigns. Joe told Strowman's win last week had nothing to do with Strowman. Joe said Strowman was no last man standing, Strowman was a man who stood up while he put Reigns down.
Reigns came out to boos and speared Joe. Strowman gave Reigns the Oklahoma Stampede. Lesnar and Strowman were left standing. Fans cheered when they walked towards each other, but security pulled them apart. Lesnar escaped that group and ran towards Strowman, but security got him back. Then Lesnar and Strowman beat up the security guards piece by piece until they were alone in the ring. Again, the fans cheered. Angle ordered the locker room to get to the ring. Curt Hawkins, O'Neil, Heath Slater, Axel, Crews, Dallas, Goldust, the Hardy Boyz, Dallas and others held them back as the fans chanted "Let them fight." Lesnar and Strowman each briefly got free before being restrained.
