‘Crash and Burn’: Hulu’s Series Adaptation Of Hassan Novel Casts Leads
Posted by Ray Flook August 10, 2017
Less than three months after announcing that they would be bringing Michael Hassan‘s bestselling novel Crash and Burn to the small screen, Hulu has announced that it has cast the four main leads for the ordered pilot. Spearheaded by producer Aaron Zelman (The Killing), the coming-of-age dramatic thriller will star Alex Fitzalan (Slender Man), Sebastian Chacon (Mr. Robot), Alex Wolff (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and Camila Perez (Gotham).
Here’s how Crash and Burn‘s publisher Balzer + Bray describes the 2013 novel:
“On April 21, 2008, Steven “Crash” Crashinsky saved more than a thousand people when he stopped his classmate David Burnett from taking their high school hostage armed with assault weapons and high-powered explosives. You likely already know what came after for Crash: the nationwide notoriety, the college recruitment, and, of course, the book deal. What you might not know is what came before: a story of two teens whose lives have been inextricably linked since grade school, who were destined, some say, to meet that day in the teachers’ lounge of Meadows High. And what you definitely don’t know are the words that Burn whispered to Crash right as the siege was ending, a secret that Crash has never revealed. Until now.”
Though the premise of the series is the same as the novel, the series is moving the story to the mid-1990s and there are some name-changes of note: Steven “Crash” Crashinsky is now Steve Newman (Fitzalan) and David “Burn” Burnett is now J.R. Lopez (Chacon). Wolff has signed to play Gabriel Krall, who was once good friends with both Newman and Lopez and now works to have his version of what happened that day made public. Perez will play J.R.’s older sister, Roxanne Lopez: an aspiring dancer with talent who serves as a foundation in each of their lives.
Zelman will write and serve as showrunner for Crash and Burn; and will also serve as executive producer with Alan Gasmer and Peter Jaysen through Veritas Entertainment. Michael Dinner and Katie DiMento will also executive produce through Rooney McP Productions, with Sony TV assuming production responsibilities.
