Seeso Makes It Official: Will Shut Down Later This Year

After months of rumors, Seeso has confirmed it will close its doors later this year. The NBCUniversal-owned comedy-centered SVOD service made the official announcement Wednesday on Facebook.

There had been much speculation about Seeso’s future, following the departure of Evan Shapiro as head of the service, which was followed by layoffs amid an announcement that its business model was being reassessed.

In its farewell message, Seeso noted that There’s…Johnny! would not premiere later this month as planned, but the service is hoping to find it a new home. And current series HarmonQuest, My Brother, My Brother and Me, Hidden America with Jonah Ray and The Cyanide and Happiness Show will now be found on VRV Select. HarmonQuest Season 2 will debut September 15 on VRV Select.

Seeso Confirms It’s Shutting Down, Leaving Shows Like ‘There’s… Johnny!’ to Look For A New Home [UPDATED]
The show, from executive producer Paul Reiser, was originally supposed to premiere on August 24.

Seeso, NBCUniversal’s comedy streaming service, has confirmed that it’s shutting down later this year.

Here’s a note that the streaming service has just posted on Facebook:

We’re writing to let you know that later this year, Seeso will be shutting its comedy doors.

Though we will be departing, much of our comedy will live on – and some of your favorite Seeso Originals have already found a new home.

We’ll let you know as soon as we have further information, including where to find the exciting project “There’s…Johnny!” and other Seeso Originals in the future (in the meantime, please note that There’s…Johnny! will no longer premiere this month as previously announced. We love this show and can’t wait for everyone to see it).

Season 2 of “HarmonQuest” premieres Sept. 15 on the streaming service VRV, while “Hidden America,” “Cyanide and Happiness,” and “My Brother, My Brother and Me,” and Season 1 of “HarmonQuest” are already available on the VRV Select channel.

As Seeso further winds down operations, insiders have confirmed that upcoming comedy “There’s…Johnny!” won’t launch at the end of the month as originally planned.

“There’s… Johnny!” was originally set to debut on August 24, but according to insiders close to the show, producers are now looking to find a new home for the period comedy, set in the world of “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” circa 1972.


The decision at Seeso to shelve “There’s… Johnny!” comes after other shows also haven’t premiered as planned, including Season 2 of Dan Harmon’s “HarmonQuest,” which was supposed to return at the end of July.

Created by Paul Reiser and his “Mad About You” producer David Steven Simon, “There’s… Johnny” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April. The show centers on 19-year-old Nebraskan Andy Klavin (Ian Nelson, “The Hunger Games”), who becomes a gofer at Carson’s “The Tonight Show.”

The show also stars Jane Levy (“Suburgatory”), Tony Danza (“Taxi”), Roger Bart (“Desperate Housewives”), and T’keyah Keymah (“The Cosby Show”).

David Gordon Green (“Red Oaks”) executive produces with Reiser and Simon.
