BY DAVE MELTZER | @davemeltzerwon | JUN 18, 2017 4:32 PM
Preview by Joseph Currier
There will be two briefcases up for grabs as the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri hosts SmackDown's Money in the Bank pay-per-view tonight.
In the men's Money in the Bank ladder match, AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Baron Corbin, and Dolph Ziggler will face off for a future shot at the WWE Championship.
The first-ever women's MITB ladder match will take place as well, with Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Natalya, Carmella, and Tamina vying for the briefcase.
Jinder Mahal will also defend his WWE title as he takes on Randy Orton, Naomi will defend her SmackDown Women's Championship against Lana, and The Usos will put their tag titles on the line against The New Day.
Before that, Zack Ryder will wrestle in his first match since undergoing knee surgery in December as he teams with Mojo Rawley against The Colons on the pre-show. Our coverage begins with that match before the main card kicks off at 8 p.m. ET.
We're looking for your thoughts on the show, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to dave@wrestlingobserver.com.
**********
MOJO RAWLEY & ZACK RYDER VS. COLONS
Basic dark match. They got some heat on Ryder, hot tag to Rawley who was doing his old gimmick. Ryder used the Broski boot on Epico sending him out of the ring and Rawley used the running forearm on Primo and then they did the Hype Ryder on Primo for the pin.
WOMEN'S MONEY IN THE BANK MATCH: CARMELLA VS. CHARLOTTE FLAIR VS. TAMINA VS. BECKY LYNCH VS. NATALYA
They did a controversial finish which will probably play out on Tuesday. Lynch had the match won when James Ellsworth tipped over the ladder so she got her throat dropped on the top rope. Ellsworth then climbed the ladder and grabbed the briefcase pulled it down and threw it to Carmella who was awarded the win. Right before the finish Charlotte took out Natalya and Tamina with a forward leap off the top rope into a full twist moonsault. Very good match before the heel finish. The crowd was really hot for the entire match which was mostly trading big moves, climbing and being pulled down.
Dasha Fuente was doing a wooden interview with Lana.
USOS VS. NEW DAY FOR THE TAG TITLES
This ended up being a great match with a terrible finish. After tons of big moves and near falls, the Usos just walked out of the ring and took the count out loss. The Usos did the Midnight hour on Jey but Jimmy pulled him out of the ring and they wouldn't get back in the ring. It was Kingston & E on the team and they all pulled out the stops. E did the running spear to the floor once, tried it on both but got kicked in the head. Kingston did a forward dive on both and twisted in mid-air into a Nestea plunge dive. Earlier Jimmy did a tope onto E who caught him with a belly to belly.
They announced Daniel Bryan would make a ruling on the Money in the Bank mach.
They showed Bob Orton Jr. & Sgt. Slaughter.
NAOMI VS. LANA FOR WOMEN'S TITLE
This wan't much. The match wasn't much but. Lana did a lot of offense early which was fine but her selling was green. Then Carmella came out to cash in, teased it but then backed off. Lana kicked out of the rear view. Lana went for a second sit out spinebuster but Naomi turned it into her submission move and Lana tapped out. They tried to put over that Lana had an incredible peformance. I mean, if you expected her to be terrible, she wasn't at all.
They did a "Fashion Vice" segment. Fandango had an old school portable phone which read Property of Paul E. They were dressed like Miami Vice with some beach scenery. they showed up with a VHS tape and old school TV. A mystery team said they were the ones who attacked Breeze and said to meet them in the ring later in the show.
Mike Bennett and Maria Kanellis showed up. Mike's name is Mike Kanellis and she's Maria Kanellis. She did a character similar to TNA, right down to the first lady of wrestling.
JINDAR MAHAL VS. RANDY ORTON FOR WWE TITLE
They introduced Ric Flair, Bob Orton Jr., Baron Von Raschke, Larry Hennig, Sgt. Slaughter and Greg Gagne as St. Louis legends before the match.
The match was an offshoot of one of the expected results. They were having a good match, Mahal was solid in his stuff and Orton was very good. Orton hit the RKO but the Singh Brothers put Mahal's leg on the ropes. The Singh Brothers told the ref to DQ them since it would save the title but Orton told him not to. The ref kicked the Singh Brothers out. The Singh Brothers were leaving and came back and grabbed Bob Orton Jr. Randy then went crazy and destroyed both Singh Brothers for a few minutes including an RKO on Samir on the floor and an RKO on Samil through an announcers table. As Orton got back in ther ring, Mahal used the cobra slam for the pin.
TYLER BREEZE & FANDANGO VS. THE ASCENSION
A nothing rushed buffer match. Fandango pinned Viktor with an inside cradle. It felt like a TV enhacmenent match but without the meaning or purpose.
MONEY IN THE BANK: SHINSUKE NAKAMURA, SAMI ZAYN, A.J. STYLES, BARON CORBIN, KEVIN OWENS, DOLPH ZIGGLER
Great main event. I'd say even better than expected. They built to Nakamura vs. Styles and they were great together, both on the top of the ladder when Corbin tipped over the ladder and both caught their throat on the top rope. Corbin climbed up to win. Most of the match was a five-way as Corbin destroyed Nakamura early with ladder shots and he was never in the match until coming back with a hot comeback at 22:00 in. The undercard and bad finishes had really taken the crowd out and this match was flat early even though everyone was working hard. But a lot of big spots got the crowd into it and they wrere really hot for the last few minutes, really with Nakamura and Styles standing out. Lots of highlighs like Zayn doing a sunset flip power bomb over the ladder onto Ziggler. Styles used a Death Valley bomb on Owens onto a ladder. At one point Styles had the briefcase but Ziggler pulled the ladder so he had to hang there and eventually took a big bump after no longer being able to hold on. It felt like the finish is to set up Nakamura vs. Styles in a singles match down the line on a big show.
