6/8 SMACKDOWN BRAND RESULTS FROM SAN JUAN, PR

SmackDown Live in San Juan, PR Quick Results And Thoughts
WWE returned to Puerto Rico for the first time in two years. This time they brought their blue brand, SmackDown Live, for a live house-show at the “Coliseo de Puerto Rico” in San Juan. The crowd was ready for this show and they were hot all night. There was a near sellout, with a little over 13,000 fans in attendance. That's close 5,000 more than their last show back in 2015. Good start for the new promoters “Move Concerts”, as this is their first wrestling event in the island.
Here are some quick match results:
Shinsuke Nakamura def. Dolph Ziggler in what was a really good opener with lots of fast paced exchanges between them. The fans went crazy as soon as the first cords of the Nakamura entrance music hit the sound system and into a frenzy when he came out to the ramp. Nakamura pins Ziggler after the “Kinshasa”. Much better match than the PPV showing between the two of them. Nakamura was dominant as he should have been.
Luke Harper, Sin Cara & Mojo Rawley def. The Ascension & Eric Rowan. Everyone worked hard and it made for a fun match. I have to say, when I heard who the teams were I was a bit hesitant to get into the match as I thought it was a very odd pairing. However, this worked and the fans were into it from the start. Actually, the fans didn’t miss a bit at all during the entire evening.
Tye Dillinger def. Aiden English. Fun, fast paced match. Dillinger received one of the biggest reactions of the night as he is still remembered for his stint locally with WWC, where he teamed up with Idol Stevens (a.k.a. Damien Sandow) and were WWC Tag champions.
Sammy Zayn & AJ Styles def. Kevin Owens & Baron Corbin in what was in my opinion the match of the night. The four competitors left it all in the ring and gave the hungry Puertorrican crowd a really good tag match that was able to spotlight the strengths of each individual at different moments in the match. AJ pins KO after a “Phenomenal Forearm”.
We go to intermission. Thankfully this will be much shorter than a WWC intermission... Believe me, it was… 15 mins vs over an hour at times for WWC.
SmackDown Live Women's Championship Fatal 5 Way Match - Naomi def. Carmela, Tamina, Natalya & Becky Lynch. Good fun match that spotlighted everyone, with Naomi shinning at the end. James Ellsworth was just hysterical in his role at ringside.
SmackDown Live Tag Team Championship Fatal 4 Way Match - The Usos def. American Alpha, Breezango & The Colons. Earlier in the night, The Colons had appeared in the big screen to tell everyone that they were home and they would become the new SmackDown champions tonight in San Juan. And they came close, but at the end it was the Usos taking the victory after a frog-splash.
With Puerto Rican Olympic wrestling medalist Jaime Espinal as guest timekeeper for the main event of the evening:
WWE Champion Jinder Mahal (w/ The Singh Brothers) def. “The Viper” Randy Orton in another great showing. Mahal got heat early by trying to speak to the crowd in his native Punjabi language. A good back and forth match that saw Mahal working on Orton’s left arm, and at the same time Orton tried various times to go for the RKO without any success. The finish comes when The Singh Brothers interfered and Orton caught them on the ropes, getting them ready for a double-DDT. When he turns around, Mahal gets Orton with the “Clutch Slam”.
After the interference and the match was over, The Singh Brothers went into the ring to beat once again on Orton. Orton countered and gave them both and individual RKO to send the crowd home happy.
Overall, a really enjoyable show from beginning to end. It lasted about 2 hours and 40 minutes, which in my opinion it just the sweet spot when it comes to timing the house-shows.
The production of the show brought in a stage and rampway and had installed a smaller version of what was the old Titan-Tron. There was no pyro, which is the norm for this type of shows, but the stage and screen gave it an old-school “Monday Night Raw” feel to the evening. There were a lot of fans making comments of how great the entrance-way looked and how it provided the Puerto Rico crowd a “big show” atmosphere that was very much appreciated and enjoyable.
Loudest Pops:
Shinsuke Nakamura
AJ Styles
The Colons
Randy Orton
Heel Heat:
The Usos
Jinder Mahal
Every time they played a video and Cena or Roman Reigns appeared on screen
No official return date announced, although there is a big rumor that we may see a RAW show sometime in the first quarter of 2018. As soon as there is something concrete, we will bring it to you.
All in all, a very much needed fun night out at the matches with the family. Until next time…
