From Amy Schumer to Chris Rock: A Guide to Netflix's Upcoming Stand-up Specials
Dave Chappelle, Louis C.K., Tracy Morgan and Jerry Seinfeld are just some of the big-name comedians debuting specials in the months ahead.
Amy Schumer is just one of several comedians set to debut a stand-up special on Netflix, with her special dropping Tuesday on the streaming service.
Netflix aggressively entered the stand-up space a few years ago, and has been consistently outbidding rivals including Comedy Central, Showtime and HBO to land bold-face names. In addition to Schumer, Netflix will air upcoming specials from Dave Chappelle, Louis C.K., Tracy Morgan, Jerry Seinfeld, Sarah Silverman and Chris Rock, the latter of whom got a whopping $40 million for two specials.
Here are just some of the big-name comedians set to debut concert specials on Netflix in the months ahead.
Dave Chappelle
March 21
After a 12-year absence from concert specials, Chappelle will make his much anticipated return with three exclusive comedy specials set to air on Netflix this year. While there are no premiere dates confirmed, the concept for each special has already been predetermined. For the first special, Chappelle and director Stan Latan will produce an original series for the streaming site, whereas the other two specials will derive from what is labeled as “Chappelle’s vault.” One of the secret specials was produced from a performance that took place at the Hollywood Palladium, while the other from the Austin City Limits Live venue. Netflix vp original documentary and comedy Lisa Nishimura said when making the announcement: “Dave Chappelle is a legendary voice in comedy — searing, vital, and now more than ever, essential. Dave’s three new specials promise to be some of the most anticipated events in comedy.” In 2009, Chappelle was recognized in as one of Comedy Central’s ‘100 greatest stand-ups of all time.' He most recently hosted Saturday Night Live last year and is best known for his television series The Dave Chappelle Show.
Louis C.K.
'2017' (April 4); second special TBA
With eight stand-up specials under his belt, Louis C.K. is well-respected in the comedy world. In 2011, he released a special Live From the Beacon Theater, sold exclusively on his website for $5. He created the series Louie and Horace and Pete and has served as an executive producer for Baskets and Better Things. Apart from comedies, he has starred in two Oscar-nominated films, Blue Jasmine and American Hustle. This year, he is slated for two comedy specials set to debut on Netflix. The first special, 2017, will be released in April and will mark his first Netflix original special. Sarandos said in making the announcement: “Louis has been one of the most innovative comedy voices in this new era of stand-up. He has also been a thought leader in the business of comedy. We have marveled at his creativity and his ability to invent comedically and commercially, and are thrilled that he is bringing his newest specials to Netflix.”
Tracy Morgan
'Staying Alive' (May 16)
After being severely injured in a 2014 car crash, comedian and actor Tracy Morgan will see his first filmed stand-up special since the accident to debut on Netflix in May. The special is titled Staying Alive and documents the aftermath of Morgan’s tragic car accident as he offers insight into his career and life. The show will explore topics such as coping with traumatic brain injuries, learning to walk again, dealing with the loss of his friend James McNair (who was involved in the accident with Morgan) and "falling" for his physical therapist. Morgan is best known for his work in Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock. He most recently made his return to the big screen in Fist Fight and will executive produce and headline a new TBS comedy.
Chris Rock

After an eight-year hiatus from the stand-up arena, Chris Rock will be making his anticipated return with two stand-up specials set to air on Netflix later this year. The Emmy-winning comedian is earning a record-breaking $40 million for both specials. The first special will follow Rock while he plans a world tour. "Chris Rock is a beloved actor and director, and his remarkable stand-up makes him comic royalty. There is no one like him, and Netflix offers the global platform and creative freedom that will serve as a perfect home for someone with his incredible talent,” Ted Sarandos said when making the announcement last year. Rock has starred in countless comedy roles that include A Very Murray Christmas, Everybody Hates Chris, Saturday Night Live, Grown-Ups and The Chris Rock Show.
Amy Schumer
'Amy Schumer: The Leather Special' (March 7)
Already recognized by the Emmys for her HBO special Live at the Apollo and her Comedy Central series Inside Amy Schumer, Schumer is taking her latest stand-up comedy to Netflix. The streaming service will premiere Schumer’s new special March 7, with a performance that was recorded in November 2016 at the Bellco Theater in Denver. “Amy Schumer is a boundless threat and a one-of-a-kind talent," Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said. “We couldn’t be more excited that she’s making Netflix her home for her next stand-up comedy special.” Her hit 2015 comedy, Trainwreck, earned her a Golden Globe nomination and made $110.2 million at the box office. She is set to make her return to the big screen alongside Goldie Hawn in their new comedy, Snatched, to be released May 12. Of her comedy special, Schumer jokingly said, “Very happy to be a part of the Netflix family for this special. Maybe now they will look at my Stranger Things audition tape to play the demogorgon for Season 2.”
Jerry Seinfield

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld recently signed a production deal with Netflix for two stand-up specials and additional episodes of his award-winning series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, which is moving from Crackle. The series follows Seinfeld as he and famous guests partake in a ride-along interview. The Seinfeld star’s new partnership with the streaming service results in Netflix becoming the new home for all 59 episodes of the series, with 24 new episodes expected to be released later this year and throughout 2018. “Jerry is known the world over as both a great TV innovator and beloved comic voice,” Sarandos said in a statement. “We are incredibly proud to welcome him to the Netflix comedy family.” Seinfeld will also become involved with developing unscripted and scripted programming for the stream service. "I am also very excited to be working with Ted Sarandos at Netflix, a guy and a place that not only have the same enthusiasm for the art of stand-up comedy as I do, but the most amazing technology platform to deliver it in a way that has never existed before. I am really quite charged up to be moving there,” said Seinfeld. The comedian is best known for portraying a fictional version of himself in his hit sitcom Seinfeld.
Sarah Silverman

Silverman's as-yet-untitled special will film later this month for a May 30 premiere. Liam Lynch will direct the special, with JASH signing on to produce with Thruline’s Amy Zvi. JASH, a comedy-driven media company, was co-founded by Sliverman along with Michael Cera, Tim Heidecker & Eric Wareheim and Reggie Watts.) The comedian, best known for her Comedy Central series, won an Emmy in 2014 for her HBO special Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles. Her other acting roles include such series as Masters of Sex and The Good Wife and films including Wreck It Ralph and A Million Ways to Die in the West as well as the upcoming releases The Book of Henry and Battle of the Sexes.
