The announcement was made during CinemaCon 2017 on Tuesday by Adam Fogelson, chairman of STX’s Motion Picture Group. The movie will be released under the STX Family label. Fogelson said “Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” will also feature new songs written by Lloyd Webber and Rice, who conceived the original musical in the late 1960s. The basis is the “coat of many colors” story in the Bible’s the Book of Genesis from the Bible. After the success of their 1970 rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Lloyd Webber and Rice expanded “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” into a full musical, which was performed on Broadway for the first time in 1982. Elton John’s Rocket Pictures is producing the film in association with Really Useful Group. Rocket is currently producing the animated feature “Sherlock Gnomes” for Paramount. John and Rice collaborated on the music for the 1994 blockbuster “The Lion King” for Disney. They won an Academy Award for to Best Original Song for “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and were also nominated for the songs “Circle Of Life” and “Hakuna Matata.”
