Also due on Tuesday is the subtitles-only Beautiful Bones: Sakurako’s Investigation Complete Collection (Sentai Filmworks, 300 min., Subtitles Only, $49.98, BD $59.98), a mystery anime that aired in 2015 and is based on a series of light novels by Shion Ota about a beautiful young forensic anthropologist who solves mysteries with the aid of a teenage boy. Anime fans looking for something a little different won’t be disappointed by this intriguing mystery series.

New to North America on disc this week is the subtitles-only Triage X (Sentai Filmworks, 250 min., Subtitles Only, $49.98, BD $59.98), which contains all ten episodes of the 2015 anime from Xebec that is based on Shoji Sato’s action manga about a vigilante group that is headquartered in a hospital and is bent on killing people that it considers “cancers” on society. To make this fascistic premise work you just have to make the villains nasty enough, and Triage X does a pretty good job of that.
This week’s only other release is a special Blu-ray box Limited Edition of Infinite Stratos 2 (Sentai Filmworks, 300 min., BD $219.98), which was released here on DVD back in 2014.

Fans of classic anime series will enjoy this week’s other release, the North American debut of the Gatchaman Fighter: Complete Collection (Sentai Filmworks, 1200 min., Subtitles Only, $79.98), which contains all 48-episodes of the 1979-1980 series from Tatsunoko Productions, which was the third series to feature the Science Team Ninja Gatchaman characters, whose original 1972 exploits formed the basis for the American “adaptation” known as Battle of the Planets. One third of the episodes of Gatchman Fighter were utilized (along with most of the second Gatchaman series, Gatchaman 2) to create the Saban American release Eagle Riders, which was syndicated here in the 1990s.

This week’s offerings include Tamako: Love Story (Sentai Filmworks, 85 min., BD $39.98), the 2014 anime movie from Kyoto Animation that is a sequel to the 2013 Tamako Market TV anime series and continues the subtle, sweet slice-of-life comedy.
Another very interesting anime release is Chihayafuru Part 1 (Sentai Filmworks, 625 min., $79.98, BD $99.98), which collects the 25-episode Madhouse series from 2011-2012 that is based on Yuki Suetsugu’s josei manga about a girl who wants to become an elite player in competitive Kurata, a traditional Japanese card game that has about 20,000 serious players in Japan where, because of the agility and feats of memory involved, it is considered a sort of sport.

Also new this week is Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma (Sentai Filmworks, 600 min., $79.98, BD $99.98), which contains the first 24 episodes of the 2014 anime from J.C. Staff that is based on the cuisine-happy comedy manga series from Yuto Tsukuda. This series was simulcast on Crunchyroll, but is being released on disc for the first time.

All of this week’s anime offerings are “subtitles only,” a sign of things to come, save for Beyond the Boundary: I’ll Be Here (Sentai Filmworks, 180 min., BD/DVD Combo $49.98), which collects the two anime films produced by the stylish Kyoto Animation studio in 2015 and based on the urban supernatural light novel series by Nagomu Torii.
the Bakuon!! Complete Collection (Sentai Filmworks, 300 min., Subtitles Only, $49.98, BD $59.98), a 2016 series from TMS that is based on the seinen manga by Mimana Orimoto about four girls who join the motorcycle group at their high school.

This week’s top release is Ushio and Tora: The Complete TV Series (Sentai Filmworks, 975 min., $99.98, BD $129.98), which collects the 39-episode 2015-2016 by MAPPA and Studio VOLN and based on the action-packed supernatural comedy manga by Kazuhiro Fujita about a teenage boy who is stalked by a gigantic supernatural monster imprisoned by the boy’s samurai ancestors that was previously adapted in several series of OVAs in the 1990s.
September 12, 2017:
This week’s offerings include Tamako: Love Story (Sentai Filmworks, 85 min., BD $39.98), the 2014 anime movie from Kyoto Animation that is a sequel to the 2013 Tamako Market TV anime series and continues the subtle, sweet slice-of-life comedy.
Another very interesting anime release is Chihayafuru Part 1 (Sentai Filmworks, 625 min., $79.98, BD $99.98), which collects the 25-episode Madhouse series from 2011-2012 that is based on Yuki Suetsugu’s josei manga about a girl who wants to become an elite player in competitive Kurata, a traditional Japanese card game that has about 20,000 serious players in Japan where, because of the agility and feats of memory involved, it is considered a sort of sport.

Also due on Tuesday is the new Magical Girl anime from White Fox, Matoi: The Sacred Slayer: Complete Collection (Sentai Filmworks, 325 min., $49.98, BD $59.98). This 13-episode 2016 series was streamed here on Hulu and the Anime Network, but is now available with an English dub.

Originally schedule earlier, but pushed back by production problems, The Ushio & Tora Premium Box Set (Sentai Filmworks, 975 min., $249.95), contains the previously released 39-episode series (see “DVD Round-Up: Batman & Harley Quinn”) plus a hardcover collector’s booklet, double-sided art cards, PVC Tora keychain, Beast Spear Replica, and a poster.

This week’s lone “subtitles only” release is the Golden Time: Complete Collection (Sentai Filmworks, 600 min., BD $79.98), which collects all 24 episodes of the 2013-2014 J.C. Staff romantic comedy series that was previously released here in two parts in 2015.

Previously released as separate sets, Amagami SS and Amagami SS+ (Sentai Filmworks, 925 min., BD $79.98) are available together at a reduced price, and the same is true of the Persona 4: The Animation Complete Collection (Sentai Filmworks, 670 min., BD $89.98), which includes previously released anime based on the PlayStation 2 video game Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4.

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions Rikka Version (Sentai Filmworks, 96 min., BD $39.98) is an anime film cut from the 2012 Kyoto Animation series based on the Love, Chunibyo light novel series by Torako, about a ninth grader who is trying to shed his delusions. This version presents the first season footage and narrative from point of view of the protagonist’s delusional girlfriend.
October 31, 2017:
Also due on Tuesday is The Dragon Dentist (Sentai Filmworks, 90 min., BD $39.99), which contains the two 45-minute TV specials based on an 8-minute original net animation by Otaro Maijo, an interesting fantasy about a girl who is trained to clean the teeth of the dragon who protects her native land. The 2 forty-five minute TV specials were produced by Khara and aired in Japan in February of this year.

Another slice-of-life drama due this week is Haven’t Your Heard? I’m Sakamoto: Complete Collection (Sentai Filmworks, “TV-14,” 325 min., $59.98, BD $69.98, Premium Box Set $179.99), which collects the 12-episode 2016 Studio Deen series based on Nami Sano’s manga (published here by Seven Seas) about a supercool high school boy, who seemingly triumphs in every situation, even though his jealous male classmates are constantly playing pranks on him. The Premium Box Set includes the Japanese Promo, the “Sakamoto Survival Guide” booklet, a 47-track soundtrack album, five double-sided art cards, Sakamoto socks, and a microfiber cloth.
