Six years after Lucasfilm shelved plans for “Star Wars: Underworld,” fans are still holding out hope for a live-action television series set in a galaxy far, far away. Only now it’s “The Old Republic.”
A petition on Change.org urges Disney and Lucasfilm to develop a Netflix drama based on “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic,” the popular video game franchise set thousands of years before the rise of the Galactic Empire. To date, the petition has garnered more than 46,000 supporters.
“The Knights of the Republic series of games as well as the MMORPG ‘Star Wars: The Old Republic’ serve as the main vehicles to tell stories of characters such as Darth Revan, Darth Malak, Bastila Shan, Darth Traya, Meetra Surik, Darth Malgus, Satele Shan, and the list goes on,” the petition states. “The popularity of this era in ‘Star Wars’ history is felt throughout the fanbase, and I feel it would do a massive disservice to us if these stories weren’t told.”
Citing “Narcos,” “House of Cards” and Marvel’s dramas, the petition states Netflix “can serve as a platform to tell these stories as they were meant to be portrayed: dark, foreboding, and a touch on the mature side.”
A longtime favorite of the “Star Wars” faithful, the game franchise continues with the MMPORG “The Old Republic,” which recently debuted an epic cinematic trailer for its “Knights of the Eternal Throne” that offers a taste of what a live-action series could look like.
Hopes for a “Star Wars” live-action series were renewed following Disney’s 2012 purchase of Lucasfilm when Paul Lee, then president of ABC Entertainment Group, revealed a desire for such a project. Although rumors continued to swirl over the next few years, Lee revealed in January that Lucasfilm’s live-action plans remain focused on the big screen, at least for the time being. However, his successor, Channing Dungey, suggested in August that discussions were still ongoing.
Spearheaded by longtime Lucasfilm producer Rick McCallum, “Star Wars: Underworld” (as it’s commonly referred to) would have been set between the events of “Revenge of the Sith” and “A New Hope,” and focus on the criminal underworld of Coruscant. In development for at least five years, the project was shelved in 2010 because it was determined to be too expensive to produce, reportedly in the neighborhood of $5 million per episode, on par with HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”
