www.bleedingcool.com/2016/10/10/guy-ritchie-talks-direct-live-action-aladdin-disney/Guy Ritchie Is In Talks To Direct A Live Action Aladdin For Disney It was really only a matter of time at this point that this project would turn up, but I have to say, I didn’t expect the personnel. Deadline are reporting that Disney is in talks with Guy Ritchie to get him to direct a live action version of Aladdin. Big Fish‘s John August has written the script. Not much more is known here, with no release window, but it is noted that “the hope is to start a new franchise”. Disney are all in for their live action versions of animated classics, and while I can’t quite ‘see’ a Ritchie Aladdin, I have to say, I’m interested in whatever it does end up looking like.

www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/will-smith-talks-play-genie-live-action-aladdin-995554Will Smith in Talks to Play Genie in Live-Action 'Aladdin' The role was voiced by the late Robin Williams in the 1992 animated classic. Guy Ritchie may have found his Genie. Will Smith is in early talks for the magical, musical role in the live-action adaptation of Aladdin. The Genie role was voiced by the late Robin Williams in the original 1992 animated film, which was part of Disney’s animation renaissance and retold the Middle East-set folk tale of a young man granted three wishes by a genie trapped in a lamp and the evil sorcerer who covets the magical object. Smith was previously in talks with Tim Burton about the live-action Dumbo movie, but a deal never materialized due to scheduling. The actor had been trying to juggle that project and Bad Boys 3, but with the latter now off the table temporarily due to a loss of a director, Smith may have more wiggle room in that department. He remains a high-salary player, so a deal is far from a sure thing. Dan Lin, who was a producer on the Sherlock Holmes movies for Warner Bros., is producing what Disney says will be an ambitious and nontraditional take on Aladdin via his Lin Pictures banner. Jonathan Eirich will executive produce the movie and oversee it for Lin Pictures. If a deal is made, Smith's casting would be the first big role filled for the Ritchie film, which is currently amid a worldwide casting search for its two leads.

www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/disneys-live-action-aladdin-finds-jafar-1026545Disney's Live-Action 'Aladdin' Finds Its Jafar (Exclusive) Former 'SNL' star Nasim Pedrad also joins the live-action remake, which has Will Smith playing Genie. Marwan Kenzari, the actor who is poised to break through as part of the all-star cast of the upcoming Murder on the Orient Express, is in negotiations to star as the villain in Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin. At the same time, former Saturday Night Live comedienne Nasim Pedrad has landed a role created specifically for the new movie. Will Smith is toplining as the wish-granting genie while Mena Massoud will play the title character, a street rat who ends up over his head when he pretends to be a prince in order to win the hand of Princess Jasmine, played by Naomi Scott. The story, which aims to follow that of Disney’s 1992 animated classic while also taking cues from the folktales in One Thousand and One Nights, is set in Agrabah, a fictional cosmopolitan city inspired by locations and cultures from the Middle East to India and China. If a deal makes, Kenzari will play Jafar, the grand vizier to the sultan of the Agrabah who wants to use the genie for his own nefarious plans. The character is in the pantheon of the most recognizable Disney villains and was voiced by Jonathan Freeman in the animated movie. Pedrad will play Mara, the handmaiden and friend to Jasmine. The part is described as a comedic supporting role. Guy Ritchie is directing the project from a script by John August (Big Fish, Corpse Bride). Dan Lin, who worked with Ritchie on Sherlock Holmes, is producing. Kenzari also appeared in MGM's Ben-Hur, Universal's The Mummy, and opposite Noomi Rapace and Glenn Close in Netflix’s action thriller What Happened to Monday. In Fox’s all-star remake of Orient Express, Kenzari portrays the conductor of a train filled with duplicitous characters played by Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley, Johnny Depp and Josh Gad, among others. He is repped by ICM Partners and Janey van Ierland at Nummer19 Films in Holland. Pedrad, who has also appeared on TV's Scream Queens and New Girl, is repped by CAA.
