Universal Pictures' home entertainment content group has acquired Finnish sci-fi comedy Iron Sky: The Coming Race in multiple territories, including Germany and the U.K..
In a major global deal, Universal has also taken all rights for the film across Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Latin America, as well as select territories in Asia.
The sequel to Timo Vuorensola's cult “Nazis from the moon” feature from 2012, the film picks up 20 years later, when another secret Nazi threat, this time from a vast subterranean civilization, threatens life on earth.
New Zealand actress Stephanie Paul reprises her role from Iron Sky as the Sarah Palin-esque president of the United States. Space Nazis Julia Dietze and Udo Kier also return for the sequel, JOINED BY an eclectic cast that includes Australian martial art champion-turned-actor Kit Dale and comedian Tom Green. Vuorensola directed the sequel which, like the original Iron Sky, was produced by Tero Kaukomaa.
Budgeted at $20 million (€17 million), Iron Sky: The Coming Race was bankrolled by a combination of crowdfunding and traditional financing and produced by Kaukomaa and Vuorensola's shingle Iron Sky Universe together with 27 Films Production in Germany and Belgium's Potemkino. The film is currently in post with a release planned for 2017.
In addition to the Universal deal, Noori Pictures has acquired the title for South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam, with Twin taking Japanese rights.
Disrupting Influence and Atlas International Film are handling international rights and are selling Iron Sky: The Coming Race at TIFF.
