We’re hearing there were multiple interested parties on this one, but STX came out on top earlier tonight. Described along the lines of the Bourne series and Salt, and echoing A History Of Violence, Red Widow flips convention with a female lead at the center of the revenge thriller-cum-political conspiracy tale. The story follows superspy Sara Drake, who traded in her legendary career for a normal life eight years earlier and went completely off the grid. Forced back into action after a rogue special ops team murders her husband, Drake embarks on a bloody quest for vengeance that leads to the highest rungs of government, uncovering a secret that could shake the foundations of American democracy. Matt Berenson (The Place Beyond the Pines) and Jim Wedaa (Mission to Mars) of Parallax Management are attached to produce Red Widow, a continuation of their relationship with STX. The duo previously served as producers on STX’s indie horror hit The Boy that debuted in North American January 22 and went on to bring in a worldwide take of $64M on a $10M budget. Altman is repped by Wedaa and by Chris Ridenhour at APA.
