Dynamite and Shout! Factory Partner for 'Red Sonja' Animated Feature
The movie adapts Gail Simone and Walter Geovani's comic book storyline.
When it comes to movies, the She-Devil with a Sword is back.
Dynamite Entertainment and Shout! Factory on Thursday announced at San Diego Comic-Con details of Red Sonja: Queen of Plagues, a new animated feature centering on the woman that puts Conan the Barbarian to shame.
Adapted from the fan-favorite comic book storyline by Gail Simone and Walter Geovani, Queen of Plagues will become a fully animated 72-minute feature, with Ultimate Spider-Man's Misty Lee voicing the red-haired barbarian. The adaptation comes via Shout! Factory, in partnership with Dynamite Entertainment and Red Sonja LLC.
The 2012 storyline revitalized the origins of the character, who originally debuted in 1973's Conan the Barbarian No. 23, based on a Robert E. Howard character called Red Sonya of Rogatino from a separate short story titled "The Shadow of the Vulture." (That Sonya was a warrior from the 16th century, as opposed to the "Hyborian Age" setting of the contemporary version). In the revised version, Sonja is given more agency — she becomes a self-taught warrior, as opposed to being empowered by a goddess — and the sexual abuse originally central to her origin is removed entirely.
The animated feature comes ahead of a planned live-action reboot for the character, who previously featured in a 1985 movie starring Brigette Nielsen. In the works since 2010, the movie has cycled through both stars (Rose McGowan and Amber Heard were attached at different times) and behind-the-camera personnel. Last year, screenwriter Christopher Cosmos was brought on by Nu Image/Millennium Films to create a new screenplay.
In a statement supporting the announcement of the animated film, Red Sonja LLC president Luke Lieberman called Queen of Plagues "one of the best books we have ever put out," while Dynamite publisher and CEO Nick Barrucci described his company as being "fortunate to work with Gail and Walter as they had an incredible run on Sonja that had incredible critical acclaim," adding, "that we could work with them to create this movie to reach a larger fan base is incredibly rewarding."
The animated feature will be released Aug. 2 on Blu-ray and DVD.
