Netflix Beams Up International Rights To CBS’ New ‘Star Trek’
Netflix just picked up the rights to offer episodes of CBS’ new upcoming Star Trek series outside of the U.S., where it will appear on CBS All Access, and Canada, where it will be on Bell Media.
The global streaming power will have the show exclusively in 188 countries, and make episodes available within 24 hours of their premiere in the U.S. It’s due to launch in January, with shooting to begin in September.
Netflix also beamed up rights to all 727 episodes in the Star Trek TV library including Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise.
They’ll be available worldwide by year end.
Canada’s Bell Media has similar rights to offer the new Star Trek on linear and subscription VOD in English and French. These episodes will appear simultaneously with the U.S. release. It also licensed the Star Trek library.
“The launch of the new Star Trek will truly be a global television event,” says CBS Studios International CEO Armando Nuñez.
Netflix Global Television VP Sean Carey calls the series “one of the most iconic shows in television history,” adding that the new version “promises to continue the rich tradition of adventure and is sure to excite fans everywhere Netflix is available.”
CBS is producing the show with co-creators Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller — including Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout, Fuller’s Living Dead Guy Productions, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Kurtzman, Fuller, Heather Kadin, Gretchen Berg & Aaron Harberts, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth are the executive producers.
