Variety has confirmed that Universal acquired the sci-fi spec “Moonfall,” which Emmerich wrote in 2012 with Harald Kloser and Spencer Cohen. Sony Pictures was also in the running for the pic, which Emmerich will direct as well as produce with Kloser. “Moonfall” is about a group of people who must save the earth when, as the title would imply, the moon falls out of orbit and hurdles toward earth. Emmerich and Kloser have previously collaborated on films including “The Day After Tomorrow,” “10,000 BC,” “2012,” “Anonymous,” “White House Down,” and most recently, “Independence Day: Resurgence.” With “Moonfall,” Emmerich stays in his wheelhouse of directing science fiction epics. “Independence Day: Resurgence” has been forecast for an opening weekend of $50 million at 4,068 locations. The original opened two decades ago with a then-massive $50 million domestically on its way to a $306 million U.S. total and $817 million worldwide. Emmerich and Kloser are both represented by CAA and attorney John Diemer. Cohen is represented by WME.
