variety.com/2016/film/asia/china-boonie-bears-to-get-u-s-release-1201794354/ China’s ‘Boonie Bears’ to get U.S. Release Chinese animated film “Boonie Bears: Mystical Winter” is to get a release in the U.S. through Steven Paul’s SP Releasing. SP Releasing has a 10-film per year distribution agreement with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and will give the movie a platform theatrical release. The film is a movie spin off from one of the most successful Chinese TV cartoons of recent years. It scored over $47 million at the Chinese box office in 2015. Featuring two bears who try to stop a logger from destroying their forest, the series debuted in 2012 and screened both on China Central Television and the iQIYI streaming platform. It currently runs to over 400 13-minute episodes. SP acquired the rights directly from producer Fantawild Animation. This summer SP Releasing will also be theatrically distributing “JL Family Ranch,” starring Jon Voight, Melanie Griffith, and James Caan, and “The Dog Lover,” with James Remar, Lea Thompson, Jayson Blair and Allison Paige. Paul, who has credits including “Ghost Rider” and “Tekken,” is currently in production on “Ghost In The Shell” starring Scarlett Johansson, with Paramount Pictures distributing. Production is currently on location in Hong Kong.
