Why ‘Walking Dead’ Creator Robert Kirkman Decided to Adapt Another Comic for TV
Terrifying, unsettling and different — that’s how Patrick Fugit and creator Robert Kirkman described the new horror series “Outcast.” The premiere took place Wednesday at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, which was very fitting, considering the tone of the series.
When asked about “The Walking Dead” being an intimidating comparison to the new Cinemax series, Kirkman said: “Not at all.”
“I like working, it’s a lot of fun, but it was just time to do another,” Kirkman shared. “I wanted to put a fresh coat of paint on the exorcism and possession genre. It treats demonic possession as a solvable problem.”
But even Kirkman admitted that he gets spooked by his own material at times, revealing that “Outcast” is “hard to write at night.”
“If I’m writing scary scenes and I don’t get a little scared, then I’m doing something wrong,” he added.
Fugit said that he became a fan of Kirkman’s comic when he researched the backstory of his demon-possessed character Kyle Barnes.
“I was really curious about the mood of the show,” Fugit said. “We keep on a fairly parallel overall journey, but we have a lot more tools at our disposal to tell a story.”
“Outcast” premiere on June 3 at 10 p.m. on Cinemax.
