Oscilloscope Buys Australian Teen Drama ‘Girl Asleep’ for U.S.
Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired U.S. rights to Australian coming-of-age drama “Girl Asleep,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The movie premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival before opening Berlin’s 2016 Generation 14plus. It will have its North American premiere at the upcoming Seattle International Film Festival this month prior to its U.S. release.
The film stars Bethany Whitmore as a 1970s adolescent who’s been content to remain a wallflower. Her bubble of obscurity is burst when her parents throw her a surprise 15th birthday party and invite the whole school.
Eddie Cockrell gave the film a strong review at Berlin for Variety: “‘Girl Asleep’ is an exuberant example of imaginative filmmaking that takes its cues from imagination and talent — with nary a focus group in sight.”
Director Rosemary Myers said, “It’s an amazing feeling to know that the story of Greta Driscoll, into which we poured our own sensibilities, experiences, and lateral imaginations, has resonance half a world way. We had an exhilarating time making this film (which was a first for me) and we hope the American audiences have lots of fun with it.”
The film was produced by Jo Dyer, through production companies Soft Tread Enterprises and Windmill Theatre Company. Matthew Whittet, who plays the father, adapted the screenplay from his play.
